Story

Natural Bridge Park near Natural Bridge, Alabama, is park in Winston County, Alabama, that has been open since 1954. The current owners are Jim and Barbara Denton. The park includes picnic accommodations, an artesian well which supplies drinking fountains, a gift shop featuring hand-crafted items, 27 varieties of fern, a variety of hemlock which dates back to the Ice Age and a 30-minute nature trail. The Natural Bridge formation is 60 ft (18.3 m) high, 148ft long, and composed of sandstone and iron ore. This bridge is the longest natural bridge east of the Rocky Mountains in North America.Downhill from the natural bridge is an outcropping of rock, presenting the image of a large American Indian head, in the right profile view, similar to that of an old American Indian Head nickel (see photo). The stone image is just over 15ft high.As of 2015, admission cost $3.50 for adults. Because of insurance concerns, visitors are not allowed to walk over the bridge, but instead, they view it while walking underneath. The park is open from 8:00 A.M. until sunset seven days a week.HistoryThe natural bridge formation is said by geologists to date back about 200 million years. It was formed by water erosion of the weaker sandstone away from the stronger stone bridge spans, creating an erosion feature: natural-bridge.

This was our third visit to Natural Bridge. Naturally, the bridge itself hasn't changed, but the little shop has expanded and the inclusion of benches and chairs makes the area more welcoming. The shop attendant was courteous and attentive. She took great care with the items we purchased. This year, due to the extreme cold, there are icicles hanging from the bridge and part of the water flowing through it is also frozen. It's a great place to visit on a freezing day, too. We will recommend this natural wonder to everyone we know.

Very unique set of arches. Out in the middle of North Western Alabama. Not like the arches in Utah. Structurally different, and different material in the rock. And I'm like the ones in Utah this is very easy to access and crawl all around. Signs posted everywhere telling you not to crawl on top of the arch. Apparently they are afraid it will fall in.

We love visiting Natural Bridge. It's beautiful in all seasons but best if visited during fall. Very friendly staff.

I had not been to Natural Bridge since I was a kid. I was amazed how well kept everything was. My wife and I had a great time walking the trails and enjoying the scenery. This was a fun day trip for us and relatively close to home. I can't wait to visit again when the weather cools off and the trees start to change colors. Highly recommend this to everyone.

I had thought about taking the kids here for a number of reasons. One to get out, get some exercise, see some nature, spend some quality, family time together, and get away from the electronics! So glad we went because they loved it! That's enough for me to give it 5 stars. Nice little gift shop there. We got some food close to there and had a little picnic at the tables they had near the parking lot. The kids enjoyed feeding the small fish in the creek next to them. I had a hard time finding admission prices, but it is $3.50/adult, half price for kids, 4 and under is free.Next stop, Dismal canyon!
