Negro Southern League Museum

Story

The Negro Southern League Museum (NSLM) is located in the heart of Birmingham's Parkside District. The museum tells the story of African-American baseball from a local perspective. Birmingham is proud to boast its rich heritage, honor the players of the Negro Leagues, and display the artifacts that not only changed the way Birmingham residents enjoyed the game of baseball, but influenced the way we see the game today.

With over 8,000 square feet of exhibit space, the Negro Southern League Museum showcases the largest collection of original Negro League artifacts in the United States. Guests of the museum enjoy a self-guided tour that begins with the origins of the Negro Leagues, moving towards integration, and the impact of the Civil Rights movement on baseball, to what we see today.

NSLM is proud to have Dr. Layton Revel, founder and executive director for the Center for Negro League Baseball Research, serve as its resident historian and curator. Dr. Revel is considered one of the leading authorities on Negro League baseball in the United States. Dr. Layton's expertise, coupled with a full-time research team dedicated to the preservation of African-American baseball in America, makes NSLM one of the premier baseball museums in the country.

So come out and enjoy the Negro Southern League Museum. Whether you are a novice or a baseball enthusiast, NSLM has something for you!

I visited the Birmingham Negro Southern League Museum in October 2017. As a new resident, I was eager to learn more about the Negro Baseball League. I participated in an exciting tour given by Director Rogers. To my delight, she was very professional, yet kind and welcoming. The museum is very clean and well managed. I believe that I speak for many citizens when I say we are proud to have such a wonderful attraction in Birmingham. Kudos to Ms. Rogers; you're doing a wonderful job!

I thoroughly enjoyed the museum. As a mother of two boys, you are always searching for ways to educate your children and keep their interest. This place did exactly that. Ms. Natasha demonstrated to my 9 year old how the baseball simulator worked, and he was ecstatic. The museum not only shows a rich history of baseball, but it threads in elements of common interests for everyone.

This is an amazing Museum with a lot of history. The inter activity was a great component; my 3-year-old enjoyed it. Our tour given by the director of the museum was enlighten and fresh. We will definitely be coming back and telling all of our in town and out of town friends and family about this great learning treasure.

The Museum is a true gem in the city! I was impressed by the kinds of rare artifacts housed there and by the fact that you can visit on a random day and end up meeting one of the former players. The director - Natasha - is warm and welcoming, and is passionate about highlighting the collection and gaining support for the Museum.

The facility is centrally located to many attractions that include food, entertainment, and more. I have visited twice this year and the staff is always welcoming, facility is clean, and the collections are instrumental in learning the history of baseball in Alabama. If you are in the area please make plans to visit and introduce yourself to their team. It's also a great place to host an event.
