The Nevada Northern Railway Museum is dedicated to the restoration, preservation, interpretation, and operation of the Nevada Northern Railway historic facilities, yards, and rail collection.
Time stopped at the Nevada Northern Railway. It’s as if the workers went to lunch and never came back. They left behind a complete railroad, now a National Historic Landmark. Today the railroad is still operating after a century, loving cared for by the non-profit Nevada Northern Railway Foundation.
Instead of relics in glass cases or repainted old equipment on static display, here you witness touchable history. The complex is over 70 buildings and structures on 56 acres with 30 miles of track. It’s not your typical museum. Instead of going to one building, here you are encouraged to explore the complex.
It’s touchable history. It’s an operating historical railroad, instead of relics in glass cases or repainted old equipment on static display, here you witness a working steam railroad. It surrounds you. It’s gritty. It’s dirty. It smells of coal smoke, creosote and sweat. It has not been prettified, it is the real McCoy.
The Nevada Northern Railway is so much more than a train ride. Here you can experience what it is like to be the engineer of the Iron Horse. Our Be the Engineer Experience puts you in the cab of 100 tons of steam locomotive with your hand on the throttle. Or attend Railroad Reality Week, essentially a dude ranch for train fans. Experience up close and personal what it takes to keep a 19th century railroad operating in the 21st century. Or experience spending the night in a working railroad caboose in the middle of the train yard. There is no other place in the U. S. like the Nevada Northern Railway
Here you can take a peek behind the curtain of history. Visitors can go into the shops and watch as century old techniques are still used today. And you can climb aboard a steam powered passenger train and experience travel from the last century.
