About

The Nevada Northern Railway Museum is dedicated to the restoration, preservation, interpretation, and operation of the Nevada Northern Railway historic facilities, yards, and rail collection.

Story

Time stopped at the Nevada Northern Railway. It’s as if the workers went to lunch and never came back. They left behind a complete railroad, now a National Historic Landmark. Today the railroad is still operating after a century, loving cared for by the non-profit Nevada Northern Railway Foundation.

Instead of relics in glass cases or repainted old equipment on static display, here you witness touchable history. The complex is over 70 buildings and structures on 56 acres with 30 miles of track. It’s not your typical museum. Instead of going to one building, here you are encouraged to explore the complex.

It’s touchable history. It’s an operating historical railroad, instead of relics in glass cases or repainted old equipment on static display, here you witness a working steam railroad. It surrounds you. It’s gritty. It’s dirty. It smells of coal smoke, creosote and sweat. It has not been prettified, it is the real McCoy.

The Nevada Northern Railway is so much more than a train ride. Here you can experience what it is like to be the engineer of the Iron Horse. Our Be the Engineer Experience puts you in the cab of 100 tons of steam locomotive with your hand on the throttle. Or attend Railroad Reality Week, essentially a dude ranch for train fans. Experience up close and personal what it takes to keep a 19th century railroad operating in the 21st century. Or experience spending the night in a working railroad caboose in the middle of the train yard. There is no other place in the U. S. like the Nevada Northern Railway

Here you can take a peek behind the curtain of history. Visitors can go into the shops and watch as century old techniques are still used today. And you can climb aboard a steam powered passenger train and experience travel from the last century.

Visiting the Nevada Northern Railway is an adventure. We’re located on the Loneliest Road in America. The Nevada Northern Railway Museum, Depot and Gift Shop is located at 1100 Avenue A, Ely, Nevada, begin your visit in the Depot. There you will receive your tickets, a map of the grounds and the safety rules. You are encouraged to walk through the grounds. Your patronage helps preserve this National Historic Landmark and supports ongoing Museum restoration projects.

LOVED my visit to Nevada Northern Railway! I signed up to "be the Engineer" and made the trip to Ely, Nevada. What an amazing opportunity. All the people at the museum were so nice and took great care of my husband and I. Thank you! To the crew at Nevada Northern for sharing Engine 40 with us. She is such an amazing piece of history. Thank you for your efforts to preserve such a neat piece of rail road history. I'm star struck by her! We also did the "Star Train" so fun! And the ride up to Keystone with a history narrative. Enjoyed all of it! Planning to go back in October to experience the Haunted Train with my nieces & nephews. I would highly suggest you plan this into your calendar. What a great experience!!!

Did the "Be an Engineer" experience this past weekend and had an absolutely great time. As others have noted: all of the staff and volunteers are extremely friendly, helpful, and it's obvious they are passionate about what they do. We opted for the caboose as overnight accommodation. Be aware that this is more like sleeping in an unfinished cabin than a B&B: light by electric lanterns, no running water, bathrooms and showers in the nearby bunkhouse. That said, it was clean, well-maintained, and the cots were more comfortable than initially expected. Driving the old steam locomotive was a complete blast and provides a much greater appreciation for how much work and skill were required to build and operate these mechanical marvels. Highly recommended.

Great facility, interesting equipment and a great rail yard tour. Ely Nevada is a long way from most everywhere but that makes it unique. The Nevada Northern Railway has a large collection of rail equipment including locomotives on their roster including steam, diesel and strange to believe but one electric locomotive. Yard tour included the machine shop, the foundry, and locomotive stalls with ready to run diesel locomotives and one steam engine being restored with an open boiler face and all superheater tubes on the shop floor with new tubes ready to be installed, maybe another year and half and they will have two locomotives to run on their trips to the Ruth mining district. Great trip and will do it again. Railway staff were most helpful and knowledgeable both in the office and on the train.

Literally one of the best historic steam railroad experiences you will find. The train ride is one of the most extensive ones you will have with plenty of additional options to add on should you choose. I highly recommend the ride with the engineers ticket as it's an experience you won't find anywhere else. The only downside is the limit to two people. Also bring a bandana to breathe in the tunnels if riding up front. Tour guide is every extensive as well. Recommend checking out the upper level of the museum where you will find original documentation free to look through including 100 year old payroll books, and original train blueprints. I cannot recommend this place enough and is a great stop while passing through, or camping nearby.

The working railroad is the museum. Came out for railroad reality week a few years back. Came back to volunteer. Where else in the world can you get hands on with a hundred years old steam locomotive? I have watched staff and volunteers show youngsters around with great patience and making it fun. But it's usually the dad who is smiling. Great place... Worth more than a rest stop. Ride the train. Tour the shops. Have a ball!!!!!
