About

Aguilar Branch Library

Story

One of the oldest branch libraries in New York, the Aguilar Library was founded in 1886 and is named for Grace Aguilar, a Sephardic Jewish author.

In 1905, when it became part of The New York Public Library, Aguilar was serving large Jewish and Italian immigrant populations. After World War II, an influx of Puerto Rican and other Spanish-speaking newcomers led to the creation of an extensive collection of materials in Spanish. Designed by architects Herts and Tallant, Aguilar was built with funds donated by Andrew Carnegie. The interior of the building features a graceful hanging gallery with a cast-iron railing and a pressed-glass floor. Aguilar was renovated in 1996 as part of the Library's Adopt-A-Branch program and is fully accessible to persons using wheelchairs. The branch has a Center for Reading and Writing for adults, which operates 6 days/week.

This is one of the smaller libraries, they have a kids section and offer kid friendly activities. I find the staff here to be pleasant and helpful. There's a cute bakery right next door. If you are interested in reading in Spanish or getting helpful materials to apply for your citizenship exam they have lots of helpful material.

I like this library. It's right near my house. My son loves coming here. Just a quick thought though, for all Library's, don't you think you should open at maybe 8 a.m. 11 a.m. seems a little late

This is a library where you can get the job done at. It would be helpful for this place to have a bathroom though.
