About

The Melrose Library, located on the corner of Morris Avenue & 162nd St., is a bustling and active branch located in the South Bronx.

Story

The Melrose Branch of the New York Public Library is the closest branch to Yankee Stadium and the borough's thriving court system.

The branch opened its doors on January 16, 1914, and was one of the many libraries built with funds from Andrew Carnegie. The building was designed by Carrere and Hastings. Originally, the simple red-brick structure rose to four stories. The top two floors were removed during an extensive renovation and modernization in 1959. This air-conditioned library now occupies almost 10,000 square feet, and has separate rooms for children and adults.

It serves an ethnically diverse population of approximately 50,000; almost 25% of the branch's users prefer to read and speak in Spanish.

They give you very little time to use the computer. It's only 45 minutes for all the entire day. People here are sleeping and talking in their phone and nobody says anything to them. The computers are dirty. The staff is OK though, that's why I gave 3 stars. The library lacks of books, organization. It's really sad to see a library like this so poor in educational materials.

It served it's purpose for me. I used the computer to print an email. What annoyed me was the 3 children on the one computer next to me that were playing around, not so quiet and kept bumping my chair and getting in my personal space.

Its a little off the grid..which isn't bad considering your across from the courthouse.

Some staff members are rude and the library is a decent size but other than that, it's okay.

Depressing place. They have hardly any good books. Not much to pick from in the adult section. The children's section is another story - it's cheerful and well-stocked, so at least I can recommend that part.
