I'm glad that this space inside the IDS Center is no longer empty, and the store has a pretty wide selection of the categories you'd find in a Marshalls. Obviously the brands are more upscale and the prices a bit higher. I was a bit offput by the glaring fluorescent lights, stockroom merchandising arrangement and an intentionally drab in-store environment, which is far closer to T.J.Maxx in general unpleasantness. Nordstrom has shifted down-market to remain relevant in our post-department store retail economy, which is understandable. Nordstrom was renowned for its excellence in customer service, and enjoyed decades as the customer care gold standard: other retail/high-touch industry giants across the globe studied and emulated "The Nordstrom Way" of caring for shoppers. Inexplicably, Nordstrom has decided to abandon customer service excellence (in their Nordstrom Rack stores anyway) in place of surly, inattentive and impossible to find retail staff. I wish Nordstrom Rack would put as much effort into retail service as they do in-store security. They are conspicuous whether uniformed or dressed in plain clothes, which I noticed in two recent visits. An African American couple shopping near me apparently found Security's interest in them to be so great that they dropped their arms full of merchandise and huffed out of the store, using several strong curse words indicating they would not shop here again. It's bad enough that Nordstrom attached their name to retail stores which break every rule of service for which they literally wrote the book. But I'm not willing to save a few bucks for an unpleasant experience, especially one that may unfairly subject some shoppers to unreasonable scrutiny simply because of how they look.
