North Carolina Museum of Art

Story

One of the leading art museums in the American South, the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA) recently completed a major, three-year expansion that places it in the front ranks of museums nationwide.

The NCMA offers a permanent collection spanning more than 5,000 years, a variety of celebrated exhibitions and public programs, an amphitheater for outdoor performances, and the nation’s largest museum park—164 acres of trails and parkland containing major works of art.

Nice regional art museum with great master works from antiquity to modern. We went on a chilly cold day and lots of traffic inside the museum did not prevent us from enjoying our trip. My sister and I are both art teachers who teach elementary through high school and we both feel that all ages could appreciate this museum. The Greek and Egyptian collections are pretty complete for a regional museum. All (most) of the textbook impressionist masters are there and there is a a great collection of printing plates. Love to see families sprawled on the floor with sketchbooks in tow. Students are there too with their kits appreciating the techniques of acclaimed painters and sculptors. A great long afternoon!

I really enjoyed the museum. When I first pulled up I was a little confused by the layout but after visiting the inside it made more sence. The art on display is pretty incredible. The different mediums used from sculpture using forms to hand blown glass it is all awe inspiring. Highly recommended!!

For a NC museum it does not get any better. The rotating exhibits are top notch and the summer movies are in a family friendly environment. The renovations to the outdoor trails were much needed and do not disappoint. Even in the winter you will find the vast outdoor spaces filled with people, yet can also find places to be by yourself. Raleigh would do well to take lessons in their bid to redo Dix.

An interesting mix, knowledgeable and personable docents, and it was free! We had planned on just walking through on our own, but were told that a tour was about to start, so we joined it. I'm glad we did - we were taken through several very different exhibits and were given enough information that we could return to the ones that interested us and do more than just look at them. I just wish the gift shop offered a selection of prints, or maybe more postcards showing some of the collection. Will definitely return the next time we are in Raleigh!

I love visiting this art museum. Their contemporary art is one of the best I’ve see, (and I used to visit museums in NYC once a week when I lived there for 4 years). Their sculpture garden and exhibits really helps solidify this museum as next level.
