Oaklawn Farm Zoo

Story

The Oaklawn Farm Zoo is a zoo located in Aylesford, Nova Scotia, Canada. It was opened in 1984, and is family-owned and operated by Ron and Gail Rogerson. The zoo boasts the largest display of Big Cats and Primates in Eastern Canada. The 50acre zoo is in a rural setting in Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley, and includes a wide diversity of mammals, birds and reptiles. As Nova Scotia’s largest zoo, Oaklawn has a large variety of endangered and threatened species of exotic, native and domestic breeds of animals. Children can feed corn to some of the animals (notably the deer and goats) and the zoo has a restaurant and gift shop. Feeding time for the big cats and bears is a popular zoo attraction. Owner Gail Rogerson enters the cages of these animals and will hand feed them meat that is collected from local farms and surrounding areas. The zoo is open Easter weekend through November, and closed to the public during the winter.OriginRon and Gail Rogerson started a farm in the 1970s with conventional animals and some exotic animals. Schools went on field trips to the farm to learn about the animals by 1975. A program known as “Learning to Live” started in 1980 which allowed children to get experience with how to take care of animals. In 1984 the farm decided to open as a zoo and incorporated many new animals into the facility.

Wow this is my favorite zoo to visit, friendly people and staff. I love seeing all the animals, especially the baby one cause their so cute. My all time favorite is all the Big Cats including the Bobcat (Jenga) and also Blueberry the Bear. I spent all day taking photos and walking around talking to the animals and owners Gail and Ron and the workers when they had a few minutes. Grounds are looking nice and well kept. Also had supper at the canteen which was good. Had a great day! :)

Brought my son here in May and had a lovely time. You can tell all the animals and the grounds are VERY well cared for. The staff seem hardworking and close-knit like family. My son had his first pony ride and saw lions up close. There are picnic tables throughout if you byo lunch but there is also a canteen, and there is a fenced playground area with picnic tables as well to contain! Entrance price super reasonable.

Great place to take the family or enjoy on your own. Lots of animals and you can tell that they're loved. Informative placards about each animal are on display and if you'd like to get even more close and personal the 6:00 pm feeding time allows for a guided tour of the big cats and other animals.

Great place to bring the whole family for the day. They have feeding time in the evening. You also might get the opportunity to have the staff let you hold little baby chickens or rabbits. They have information posted at each encloser. As well as staff sometimes have a show and tell. Picnic areas available. Gift shop as well as a cook house and ice cream parlor.
