The Old Dutch Parsonage is a historical house built in 1751, moved about 1913 and now located at 38 Washington Place, Somerville, Somerset County, New Jersey, United States.HistoryThe -story brick house was the home of the first ministers of the first Dutch Reformed Churches in the area, built by the combined efforts of the congregations in Somerville, New Jersey, and Raritan, New Jersey, in 1751.The first occupant was Reverend John Frelignhuysen who taught seminarians in the house. His son Frederick Frelinghuysen was a Captain in the Continental Army.Jacob Rutsen Hardenbergh, one of the seminarians who occupied the house after Frelinghuysen's death along with the former reverend's widow and her children, succeeded Frelinghuysen as minister, occupant of the house, and, in 1756, as husband to the former Mrs. Frelinghuysen.Hardenbergh helped establish Queen's College, now known as Rutgers University in 1766 and in 1785 became its first President. He moved from the house in 1781 but it continued in use as a parsonage until 1810.Dr. Peter Stryker bought the house in 1810 and sold it to the Doughty family in 1836. They owned it until 1907 when they sold it to the Central Railroad of New Jersey.

I didn't get to enter the house, but they had a re-enactment and life story accounting of Phillis Wheatley which was pretty good. If history was taught like this, it would have caught my attention more in school. Parking lot is limited but street parking shouldn't be a problem.
Excellent historic houses to visit. The Wallace house is very well done with furnishings. I do have to say I've been disappointed with their journey through the past days...this year the focus was on bees and trees rather than on the houses themselves. Nothing wrong with them as sidebars but the focus should be on the houses not anything else. Nobody was leading tours so looking around is fine but you learn nothing about the house. Very disappointing that the Old Dutch Parsonage isn't open and is so badly deteriorating. I've been in it in the past and it's a cool old building. If I remember correctly it's actually where Rutgers university started so it holds much significance. I realize funding is always an issue but the state should kick in more funding and I think Rutgers should even take an interest in it as it's part of their history. The tour is free which is excellent as most houses on tours have less and charge. Maybe consider doing special events where you charge a fee for something special related to colonial times. That could help towards your fundraising. All in all I highly recommend a visit. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars was due to the parsonage as well as the history days.
Went to an open house discussion. Volunteer was knowledgeable but as a couple that tours historic homes just be aware there isn’t really anything to see in the house. Also restrooms are far and therefore not very asa accessible. Parking is also not clear and not very close. Tried to call but no one answers. Restrooms: Separate building far from house.
Sad to see it not maintained as well as it could be. It was closed when we visited but lovely to walk the grounds and read the history. In the back and to the side of the parsonage is a small cemetery.
Visitor center and both houses were closed on Sunday afternoon. No clear working schedule on visitor center door.
Great place to visit! Lots of history on one site.
Great place for quick history lesson. Our guide Hillary was very knowledgeable, patient, and went out of her way to walk us through as much detail as we wanted. This place does not pretend to be a museum, but it does give you a very real sense of how folks lived at the time.
What a hidden gem. Was visiting from out of town, and looking for a historic site to visit. Had a fabulous tour of the house and learned about its history, and Washington’s time here. For anyone in the area with even a modest interest in history, the Wallace house is a great place to visit. The tour can easily be completed in an hour, including the parsonage across the street.
Awesome historical experience to see one of the wartime residences of George Washington!
A wonderful little historic spot tucked away in a corner of Somerville. The state park interpreter always has interesting programs that run frequently. This venue consistently presents excellent programs that are of interest to the community.
