I showed up to my first class expecting a fun, high-energy cardio/circuit class, but I was really skeptical about the emphasis on heart rate monitoring and calorie tracking. I'm a fairly active person, not athlete-level and not too regimented yet, but I do work out intensely 5-6 days a week. I guess I'd say the fitness journey has been underway for long enough that I'm not easily sold on promises of huge calories burn or "science-y" claims - I just want to work up a good sweat and get my muscles shaking. SO, first class my rented HRM strap malfunctioned and I ended up completing the class without stats. I got what I expected, felt like I'd pushed myself but still didn't see the point in shelling out for an HRM. The next two classes, however, my HRM worked fine and I'm beginning to really understand what the hype is all about! Being able to track your progress - regardless of whether or not the absolute number on the calorie tracker is 100% accurate - and summarizing your workout with "splat points" REALLY makes the workout fun. It's the same principle as those running apps that make fitness more like a game, with mini-challenges and leaderboards to add another dimension to your fitness goals. I got the feeling after this 3rd class tonight that I'm going to really enjoy coming to OTF and pushing myself to obtain those 'splat points' - also, retaining an "orange" level heart rate absolutely gasses me out. My legs felt like jello after a treadmill section where I tried my darnedest to actually be in the orange zone, and I run about 10-15 miles per week. So, OTF can definitely be very challenging, and something about seeing that effort in color and numbers is unexpectedly motivating. I'm not sure I would have pushed myself quite so hard if it hadn't been for the strongest urge to see whether that splat count was creeping up. Anyway, overall I'd say OTF is definitely plenty of fun, a solid workout, with upbeat trainers and clean facilities and nice playlists - even if you aren't sold on all the bells and whistles, it's a pretty great class! One note though...watch out for form during the weights. Circuits go pretty fast and it's too easy to start flailing/ straining your neck or shoulders. I wish the coaches had more time to help monitor your form, but they do have to coordinate multiple groups at once so it's sort of up to you to keep a safe pace and correct form.
