Story

Pawtuckaway State Park is a 5000acre preserve in New Hampshire, United States. It is one of the largest state parks in southeastern New Hampshire and is named for Pawtuckaway Lake and the Pawtuckaway Mountains. The park extends from the west shore of the lake to the west side of the mountains.GeologyThe Pawtuckaway Mountains are a small, rocky, circular range that form the outline of an ancient volcanic ring dike dating from 130—110 million years ago (Cretaceous). The ring dike, first completely mapped in 1944, is a smaller and more accessible example of the same kind of geological process that formed the Ossipee Mountains to the north. The inner ring is roughly one mile in diameter, while the outer is measured at almost two miles.Earthquakes occurred in the vicinity of the ring dike in the summer and fall of 1845. Known as the Deerfield explosions, they were described as subterranean noises often as loud as the report of a 12 pounder cannon when heard at a distance of half a mile but without echoes. They were the subject of much speculation at the time.EnvironmentThe park lies within the Northeastern coastal forests ecoregion.

Very nice camp sites with plenty of water access and bathrooms available. Camp sites are fairly spaced apart but each space differs in size. Sound carries over the water so if people on other sites are loud then you'll be able to hear. Roads are well maintained and staff is friendly and helpful. Great place for low key camping and easy to medium hikes.

Pawtuckaway state park is (in my opinion) the worst of all the NH state parks. Seems neglected and overrun with too many people and trash in places along the beach area. The worst part though? The very bold and obnoxious Canadian geese that think the beach is theirs. The parent geese with gosling's are aggressive. I feel like I can't relax because the geese are always underfoot and so is their scat. It never fails that anytime I've gone to PSP the geese ruin my time. Can something be done about this??

Had a very pleasant experience at Pawtuckaway State Park. We went pretty late in the season so a lot of things were closed, but that didn't stop us from having a good time. The staff was super friendly and upbeat, which made for a nice atmosphere. The views were beautiful, and serene. Like most other state parks the campsites were compact dirt, hard to put tent stakes into, and the sites are all very close to one another, but not on top of each other, so there is a slim privacy.

This is such a wonderful place with a choice of places to hike and picnic off the beaten path. I'm not a great fan of the public swimming area, but if you hike out into the woods around North hill, yellow dog wall, the plant life and marshes are amazing, especially if you appreciate the change in geology that makes this park unusual.
