Choosing between Presque and Union Bay, I would choose Presque, however, for being in the north woods the spots have ZERO privacy. Although big spots, there just isn't anything to seclude yourself. The only rustic thing about Presque are the vault toilets and the well pump. If I were to come back I would choose the walk in sites, they aren't that far off the parking and seemed a bit more secluded from one another. I did drive through Union just to check it out but what a nightmare. This area could have done a much better job at giving a camper a more rustic, secluded feel, oh well. It was kept clean. If you want to risk not making a reservation, there are other better camping areas in the woods, but for those that live 6+ hours away that would stink to not have a spot.

Great rustic campground with gogeous waterfalls a short walk away. This campground is more secluded and private than the other modern campground on the other side of the park. We had a small black bear walk through our campsite one rainy evening when the campground was mostly empty.

It was okay, but the campsitsites weren't wooded/private and there wasn't really access to the beach from the campground area. There were some waterfalls, however, that were pretty to see.

I have spent 2 nine day trips at this campground. It is beautiful. The river is a close walk with waterfalls to see. There are steps to Lake Superior with an awesome beech.

Tent camped here for 5 days. Great park. Quiet, big sites, and clean. We were on a site right on the water but you couldn't actually get to the water cause of the cliff. Vault toilets were clean, water pump was also clean although a bit of a walk. They had walk in sites that looked pretty sweet and although we were there for Labor Day weekend there were plenty of open spots. TONS of hiking in the Porkies. We brought our bikes and kayak and didn't really use them. Presque Isle camp site is right by the presque river where there is a small hike to the beach area and a 2 mile loop where u get a better look at the beautiful river and waterfalls. Other than that we had to drive to (basically) the other end of the park to hit up other trails. To get to the other side I believe it's roughly 25 miles, so it was a bit too much daily driving. But when u get there visit the visitor's center first so u can plan ur days accordingly. Also, make sure you check out their daily activities. When we were there thry had a guided wolf hike, off path guided bear den hike, and agate hunt at the beach, backpacking talk, and how to make a fire with no matches/lighter. All the employees are so friendly and knowledgable! I'd definitely recommend taking advantage of the activities. Although presque isle wasn't as close to all the "popular" porkies sites, it was an amazing campground. If you want a beautiful rustic site that's clean and quiet stay here!
