Story

The Pullen Park Carousel is a classic wood carousel at Pullen Park in Raleigh, North Carolina. Built in 1900, the carousel contains 52 hand-carved basswood animals, 2 chariots (or sleighs), 18 large gilded mirrors and canvas panels and a Wurlitzer 125 organ made in 1924 by the Rudolph Wurlitzer Company of North Tonawanda, New York. The carousel underwent restoration from 1977 to 1982 during which time the original factory paint was uncovered, documented and conserved. Each hand-carved animal was restored to its exact Munsell Color System paint color preserving the original paint underneath a layer of shellac while enabling the animals to look just as they were originally painted. In 1976 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places and is a designated Raleigh Historic Landmark.HistoryIn 1887, Richard Stanhope Pullen donated of land to the city of Raleigh for use as a public park. The carousel was originally located in Bloomsbury Park (in the area south of Crabtree Creek, west of Lassiter's Mill Road, and north of Scotland Street) and was moved to Pullen Park in 1921 when the City Board voted to replace the steam powered antique merry go round. Bloomsbury Park, an amusement park founded by Carolina Power & Light (CP&L), was apparently in financial trouble and Pullen Park was able to acquire the carousel for $1,425 - one tenth of its original cost. The carousel became a Pullen Park focal point and is now recognized as one of the foremost surviving works of the Pennsylvania Carousel Company, founded by Gustav Dentzel.

Every time I go I get blown away at how wonderful this place is. There are paddle boats in the spring and summer but even better than that they have a train that the kids can ride and you can ride with them. The train goes all around the park and is $1 to ride. Very nice place to walk, very clean and they have a merry-go-round as well.

Wonderful park for all ages. There are plenty of free things to do, but for a reasonable price, you can ride the carousel and train. There are picnic tables and abundant space to spread out a ground quilt to stake out a place to relax and enjoy friends and family.

Came here for a bit on a recent visit to Raleigh. My 3 year old loved everything they had to offer! From an amazing playground to a train ride around the park, and carousel ride, he never got bored. The only problem was he was having too much fun and even after hours of play he still wasn't ready to leave!

Pullen Park is the best park in Raleigh. It packs plenty of activities into a single location including a playground, paddle boats, an antique carosle, a train, a play area, and jogging paths. The aquatic center also shares a parking lot in case you want to go for a swim. Mid afternoon on the first Saturday of the month are extra special but you will have to walk around the park to discover why for yourself. For those looking to rent a picnic shelter on a weekend call the park and book weeks in advance for the summer months as the spaces go fast! Parking on the weekend is a challenge so park at NC State University located directly behind the Park. Walking over saves you tons of time and frustration from fighting with everyone else who showed up after 12 noon on a weekend. The park has plenty of space it's popularity has simply outgrown the parking capacity and for good reason.

Always a great time at Pullen Park! Fall hours in effect but enjoyed wondering through the clean park with the ducks. I've been coming here for more than 40 years. I really enjoyed the boat, carousel and train ride as a toddler...my daughters did too! The Christmas train is great if you can get tickets... otherwise, you can come out and see the lights. One of the few places I can still find a locopop too! Great place to bring the kids!
