Quiet Haven Memorial Park is the new name and owners of Bellview, Belle View, or Belleview Cemetery. They have allowed this historic cemetery to fall into utter and disgraceful disrepair in no small part due to its current owners, the Bethany Missionary Slavic Church. One will quickly notice how well cared for the Slavic gravesites are- all have colorful displays of silk and plastic flowers on them. Granted, the Cemetery was not taken care of for nearly 30 years prior to the Church taking ownership, but in the 13 years since the church had acquired this historic cemetery, very little has been done to improve the plots of those buried here. There are new Russian graves in the Bellview cemetery, a spillover from the "Quiet Haven Memorial Park", most likely on top of graves that are no longer marked. A county marker prominently proclaims that 800 people were buried there starting in 1856 but perhaps only 200 markers remain. The new owners accidentally knocked down and displaced some markers and promised according to an article in the Sacramento Bee in December 2000 to do what they could to find relatives of the misplaced markers in order to put the grave markers back in the proper places. Judging from the markers that are aligning the fence, this has not happened. There is evidence that markers have been moved but it is unclear if they are where they are supposed to be. The children's grave area is overgrown by bushes. I picked one stone up that was facedown on the ground and laid against the stump of one bush, and took the empty cartons of Miracle-Gro that had been shoved in the bush and put them down in the driveway area as there was no garbage receptacle to throw them in. (Another testament to how much this cemetery is cared for by the current owners.) Many markers are covered in dirt, gravel, and weeds, and are unreadable. It looks as though precious little has been done by "Quiet Haven Memorial Park" and its church owners to make good by their 2000 pledge to correct the problems of the past and take care of this historic cemetery. Ancestors of those interred or have had their ashes put in the weedy gravel pit side of the cemetery would be aghast at the current conditions. (Many markers are broken or have had their metal plates peeled up...not to mention moved, or as I already mentioned are covered in mounds of dirt and gravel or utterly engrossed in weeds and are unreadable). One wonders why the church that owns this cemetery cannot take some of the care it obviously puts forth to its recent Russian burials and apply some of the same care to the pioneer and older graves? For "Christians" to let a cemetery under their care fall under this degree of disrepair is unconscionable. Would it hurt their beautiful silk flower displays on the Russian graves to share some of the courtesy and color to the neglected graves hidden in the back? Quiet Haven's website claims to be "Service You Can Trust" and includes photos of its decorated graves and two antique tombstones. Interestingly, the desecrated, vandalized, forgotten, overgrown and buried stones are not included in their advertising. I would strongly dissuade anyone from getting their loved one interred here due to their utter disregard for history or for anyone who is obviously not a member of their church. There are no words to express the enormity of the owners' disrespect and the travesty that they have allowed to take place on their watch. Quiet Haven? More like Quiet Haven't.
