Rio is a small theatre that provides a very different experience for the movie goer. Not a huge AMC, this fine arts theatre gives you an intimate venue to see many smaller, indie films... some of which might not make it to our area without Rio running them. Only one screen, no stadium seating... this small theatre will take you back to the theatre going experience some of us remember from our childhoods. I love going to a big theatre for an epic superhero popcorn movie-- but also love the very different experience of going to a smaller film in this cozy theatre. Not just a theatre for older patrons,- i have taken my teen kids here and they were thrilled with this tiny theatre experience. They are also super quiet and not toddlers--too small for noisy little ones and not movies for little kids. Perfect for a film like Lion which is running now. Concession stand is small and cute- good popcorn. A nice date night theatre, with super chinese food nearby. If you haven't been, definitely go see a good show and support the Rio theatre, and enjoy all of old downtown Overland Park.

Love this theater. They show fine arts films. It's not usually packed, so you can enjoy a quiet evening with a good film without fighting a crowd. And you're not likely to have to tell someone to turn off their phone.

Love this place so much. Sitting in the theatre throws you right back to the 50s, and instead of a physical play, you get a movie. Awesome atmosphere

Nostalgia and selection!  The history of the theater can be felt just by visiting.  Digital projection is very good,  audio is just okay.  Perfect spot for indie films and dramas.
