Story

Oklahoma Health Professions Education "Pipeline," Our programs are designed to: "get 'em, train 'em, keep 'em."

"Get 'em": Target groups for Health Careers programs are junior high and high school youth who express an interest in a health profession. We conduct general awareness programs to make youth aware of career opportunities in the health field. More intensive exploration activities give youth in-depth exposure to specific health occupations. Activities include summer camps, field trips, shadowing, presentations and printed-materials. In addition, we support teachers and counsellors through training and materials.

"Train 'em": Target groups for Clinical Training Support include medical students, physician assistant students, nursing students, and other health professional students. AHEC supports these students and their colleges, by finding community preceptors (local health providers who act as mentors), housing, and community training sites, and social activities so that students can receive Quality training while away from the home campus.

"Keep 'em": The target groups for Community Education and Support programs include health professionals living in rural and underserved areas, and local consumers of health care. AHEC provides continuing education and learning resources to professionals, disease prevention and health promotion education to consumers, grant writing assistance to community agencies, and active participation on local, regional and state taskforces and committees.

Mission

Improve access to quality health care for residents of rural and underserved communities by improving the quality, distribution and supply of primary care providers, and to reduce disparities in access to health care between Oklahoma’s rural and urban populations, and its majority and minority populations.
