Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church

Story

St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, is an Anglo-catholic church in Denver, Colorado. Its building, "considered by many people to be one of Denver's most beautiful churches" is a Gothic style church built c.1907-1909 that was designed by architect Ralph Adams Cram. It was dedicated January 17, 1909 as Trinity Memorial Church and renamed to St. Andrews in 1917.The distinguished architect Cram, of Cram and Ferguson in Boston, Massachusetts, was commissioned to design the building for Alexis Dupont Parker as a memorial to his wife. Parker was a "railroad magnate" of the Colorado and Southern Railway who was educated in the Episcopal Ministry and was president of the board of the Colorado diocese of the Episcopal Church. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.Expanded in 2008 to a design in keeping with Cram's original plans for a larger church, St. Andrew's now seats 175 in a sanctuary that includes works by Denver artists Marion Buchan and Albert Byron Olson. The parish house is by Denver architect Jacques Benedict.

I have attended concerts at this stunning gem of a church many times. The pews may be hard, but the acoustics are fabulous. Unfortunately, even with the expansion of the nave (2008-2009), seating in the sanctuary is very limited and fewer concerts are being performed here these days as the space is now too small for most of the established musical groups. The congregation is the second Episcopal church in Denver and was founded in 1874. The current structure was completed in 1909 with major renovations in 1988, 1999, and 2009. St. Andrew's has one of the finest music programs in Denver. St. Martin's Chamber Choir is based here and many of its singers are also members of the church choir whose music director is Timothy Krueger, also the founder and director of St. Martin's. A new, 20-rank, slider-action Buzard organ was installed in 2003 because of fire damage to the previous instrument. The original plan for this instrument is not quite complete, but the actual pipe organ is supplemented by computer enhancement to provide a seamless experience.
