The people are very nice. Favorite part is how they have the downstairs for the kids. Both of my daughters love it. And so do it.

I appreciate the friendly and helpful library staff and the beautiful, historic building. The books that are laid out are interesting and are rotated frequently. The inter-library loan is fast.

This library is in very serious need of renovation. How do I know? I have lived in Salem for nearly 50 years. I had frequently gone to this library to use their WiFi and to rent movies and books. Over the years, I have seen countless times where the staff lacked the ability to help people (disgruntled and many who did not like their job), the roof in desperate need of repair where water rained in so much that large trash barrels had to hold the water, rugs so wet, dirty, smelly (mold), that many people were complaining, and homeless people sleeping in the desk areas for hours upstairs. No, I am not exaggerating. The building is ancient, Salem has a huge issue with their homeless population, and sadly, they have no where else to go to keep warm in the winter, and cool in the summer. There are many (as in many) people who spend most of their day there and sit outside on the steps to take their smoke breaks. So many, that you have to hold your breath trying to pass all of them to get inside. Employees do not stop people from playing music and games on their computers...upstairs and in the back... (they don't have earplugs), eating and drinking snacks and full lunches (while leaving trash all over the place), and it seems the same people come in every day and use the same areas to hang out and socialize. I know because I have seen this day after day, month after month and year after year. I have asked the staff to please make sure they aren't leaving trash and being loud. I have gone to the manager to relate these issues. I was nice, polite, and thanked them. Obviously, they don't care. It has never amounted to having anything done. It got to the point that I was getting sick from the moldy smell and seeing tables and chairs so covered with years of grime that I left and have not gone back. I hate to drive to another city to use the library, but I will never go back to Salem again. How this place can stay in operation is completely a mystery. The Board of Health should close it down.
