State Library of Massachusetts

Story

The State Library of Massachusetts in Boston, Massachusetts was established in 1826 and "supports the research and information needs of government, libraries, and people through... services and access to a comprehensive repository of state documents and other historical items." It "opened in 1826 and has been in its present location in the State House since the 1890s." The State Library falls under the administration of the governor.HistoryThe State Library’s origins date back to 1811 with the establishment of a program to exchange statutes with other states. The Library was formally established by the General Court in 1826 to hold these documents and other materials that had accumulated in offices throughout the State House. State Land Agent John W. Coffin was given the additional responsibilities of State Librarian, and the Library’s collection was housed in the Land Agent’s office. The exchange program was expanded in 1844 to include judicial decisions and other significant state documents, and the documents acquired through this program formed the core of the early collections of the State Library and is one of the largest collections of state publications in existence.During the mid-19th century, the Library evolved into a comprehensive research library to support the work of the legislature, governor’s office, and other public officials. In addition to legal and public document holdings, the Library collected materials on a wide range of research topics, including political, historical, statistical, economic and scientific works. By this time, the Library’s collection had outgrown its original space and was moved to a larger, dedicated library space when a State House addition was completed in 1856. Also during this time, the Library came under the direction of the Secretary of the Board of Education in 1849.

Nice place. A large and cozy environment where you can quietly do your stuff. You can bring light snacks for long hours, but just take care not to mess the place!

some of the librarians do not seem to know there stuff like other state law libraries when I call alabama my questions are answered within 2 minutes and they are patient with me. i also contact wisconsin. i will contact all state law libraries because i need to compare their laws. they also seem to waste money on some books. they charge for scanning but they have scanning. i am coming back here next week. i am one of those people that does not like the response its online, ok then tell me where to find it

I have interned at the State Library. An excellent library to work for with highly qualified professional librarians and archivists to get help from related to archives, and library resources, and collection. Overall, State House is an excellent place and visit and work for.

it is fine but the visitors there only for the architecture are a distraction to the library patrons. the librarians are trying to help but the laws are combined with over 10 separate laws combined into 1 law gets confusing. i think there should be a new process in the state for handling this difficult situation. the are archives here i intend to look into. bring a snack for extended hours.

I like the law library resources available here. It will take about a week to find everything I need. I wonder why the library is wasting funds on books that belong in the BPL. I need to see what the public decency laws are pertaining to advertising laws in public. If alcohol and tobacco products are illegal to advertise on billboards, females in bras should also be banned from public billboards.
