Story

The Secular Jewish Circle of Puget Sound (SJC) has been a vibrant, independent, and diverse community since 1994. At SJC, Judaism thrives through holiday celebrations, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs ceremonies, a culture-based Sunday school for children, book club, dinners, outdoor family events, and social action. Our intergenerational community includes Jewish individuals and couples, children, interfaith and multi-cultural families, and members of the LGBT community.

Mission

We support a non-theistic approach to Jewish identity and culture. SJC is affiliated with the Society for Humanistic Judaism and identifies with Humanistic Judaism, which is a distinct alternative to Conservative, Reform, and Reconstructionist Judaism. Our connection to humanism reminds us that people have the strength and responsibility to change and enrich their own lives and the world around them.

A great place for making connections with like-minded Jews. Celebrating holidays, learning more about my Jewish heritage and Jewish values from a secular perspective makes it possible for me to experience being Jewish with integrity. Because I don't believe that the concept of God is germane to me as a Jew, going to a synagogue where praying to God is central is not really an option for me. It would feel hypocritical. The Secular Jewish Circle of Puget Sound is perfect for me as a secular Jew.

I've been a member of Secular Jewish Circle since my son (now 14) was 3 years old.  My motivation in finding a Jewish group was that I wanted to make sure my son knew what it meant to be Jewish - though I don't believe in God.  This group has become our family, and now that my son has had his Secular Humanistic Bar Mitzvah, I know that he'll be entering manhood with a very strong understanding of what it means to be an ethical, traditional and cultural Jew.

We wanted a secular Jewish Sunday school for our kids, and found the perfect place!  We can for the school and have stayed for the friends and the real sense of belonging.
