If you're looking to get married at the courthouse, I say do it! It takes a bit of planning, so be prepared for that. You'll have to apply for your marriage license same as everyone, but also make an appointment with a judge who can marry you. Be sure to have some flexibility in your schedule for this, sometimes the judge gets stuck in court so you'll have to wait longer than anticipated. I know in most courthouse elopement situations, money is tight. But that doesn't mean it isn't one of the most important days of your life. You're making a lifelong commitment and that deserves to be celebrated! You're going to want photos to look back on and share with friends and family who couldn't be there, so please for your own sake hire a decent photographer. Don't rely on cellphone photos or your family/friend who has a camera. Even at courthouse weddings, there's so many in between moments that you'll be so happy to have captured. Not to mention the awful lighting inside courtrooms that only a professional will know how to handle.
This whole place is a laughing joke the security guards when you enter do not know anything. Don’t ask them for help, or you will have to wait in a 30min line for an elevator half the elevators work, Just to wait in a wrong line for an hour. The tall gentleman on the basement floor talks to grown adults like there kids. Also if you have a traffic court date/time don’t try to be there on time you have to sit around until the cop wants to make his appearance. DISORGANIZED
Everytime I visited the place I think that surely they will have done something but I'm always disappointed by the rodent population. The Sedgwick Country Courthouse is infested with them. Walking the halls in their suits and ties, politicians, lawyers and judges roam the halls with impunity. With all the taxes I pay, you'd think a decent exterminator could have taken care of it by now.
I mean for what it is, its okay.Nothing outstanding here except for warrants that are being signed into place. Adult probation in the basement which I never knew until I was told recently. If you came on vacation to leave on probation then you've come to the right spot
Yikes... been here a few times now because of some paperwork issues. All government facilities make you wait, so it isn’t new to me. People have been surprisingly patient and helpful, but was a first to have someone chew me out for grabbing paperwork. Didn’t fill anything out, just grabbed it at the desk because no one was around to direct me where to go, or what to get. Apparently don’t take anything when you’re going to a court hearing. So hearing the woman talk about me loudly after I returned the paperwork is where I find it very unprofessional. Not my fault you weren’t where you were supposed to be when people come into the room. Also, if you go for jury duty, it doesn’t state anywhere on there for jury selection, that kids aren’t allow. Sure it can be implied, but no where did it state it. There was another person there who brought a kid around the age of 9. When you try calling, they’re all preoccupied to take a call, so we went there with our kid. If you are sick, they want you not to go and reschedule. The wait is tremendously long. Make sure you have your parking ticket with you because they will stamp it so you don’t have to pay. Saw people brought their personal computers. WARNING! Prepare for it to be hot! If you have a medical condition that exasperates with hot weather, prepare accordingly.
Every good review on here is fake. Family law judges have absolutely no honor or integrity. They will violate judicial conduct rules just to prove they are superior and you are inferior
It was a real expedient experience for me to go in and pay my fiance's fine ticket as a receptionist that's very helpful if the information I inquired from her about my fiance fine ticket thank you very much Sedgwick County Municipal Court keep doing the great job you are doing for people like us, I also would like to add longer time for the parking meter how people can do what they need to do inside the courthouse if it is a long line.
Was told 3 weeks ago that can pick up certified copies of marriage certificates here after our license has been filed. Was told copies run something like $1.25 and you should get several because you'll need them for official business like name changes.Headed there today and am now told you can no longer get certified copies and have to go through the Topeka Vital Statistics Office which is 2 + hours away. You can order online but now its $15.00 a copy and you can get them untracked, unsecured regular mail for free or pay an additional $20 to get them mailed to you with tracking. This is on top of the $85 you pay initially to be able to file a license. If the system was changing, people applying for licenses should have been notified ahead of time. This was very poor planning and misleading.
I agree with another reviewer that this court is corrupt especially when dealing with child support. I was discriminated against during a court session and the judge allowed it. I was called derogatory names and was told I did not deserve child support because my x waz remarried. The x, his lawyer, and the judge allowed him to claim a salary that was not true. Was homeless with kids for quite awhile and receiving no child support. ABSOLUTELY CORRUPT! Beware if you have to court here. Record everything said to you by lawyers and judges. Who would call a woman names for ask in g for child support. ABSOLUTELY ridiculous and you cannot file a complaint because these lawyers have family affiliations with politics. There is one firm in particular that is untouchable. Families and children will continue to suffer from corruptness.
I am not located in Sedgewick County so I can't just go down to the courthouse to ask questions. When I call, the people don't really know how to help. When I get transferred...they are nice...but they don't give me all the details. They assume everyone knows all the little things they need to do on paperwork, but they don't help guide you or tell you to make sure it has x, y, or z...so after you spend postage and valuable time sending things in...you get it back and get told it's missing one little thing. Like they can't just call you and tell you? I know they don't mean for it to be this way, but until the county spends some money on better technology and consulting to improve their processes, they are just going to keep lawyers in business and outdated government employees on paper work flows. Ugggghhh. Update: added two stars back because tjey were so helpful in person. Nice staff and knowledgeable.
