I highly recommend steering clear of sending your loved one to Select Specialty of West Allis.  I entrusted this hospital and staff with the care of my mom.  I was informed she would receive daily physical therapy. They had her sitting in a chair every few days.  This is absolutely not physical therapy. The room she was in was never cleaned nor sanitized. There was a new nurse for her practically every other shift.  While I understand the need for rotation, it infuriated me when I would call to receive an update and they knew nothing about my mom or supplied me with incorrect information on her.  Such as the incorrect medication they were giving her. The lack of communication within this place not only saddened me, but frusterated and disgusted me. On one occasion I had waited over 8 hours to receive a brief update on my mom's condition.  The nurse that day was very cold, rude and unprofessional.  Crystal (the nurse) had said she was busy dealing with a critically ill patient and could not update me on my mom until she had time.  This is highly unacceptable. My mom was critically ill as well and who are you to try and delegate one is more important than another.   I informed the charge nurse that I would like an update and that was completely out of line. She had agreed and a few days later I had received a call from Jennifer, the director of nursing. She had assured me this would not happen again.  That there was obviously a conflict and she would no longer ever be assigned to my mom.  This must have slipped through the cracks like many other things there as not long from then she was her nurse.  There were times my mother had been sitting in her own urine for who knows how long as she had several severe rashes resulting from this.  The biggest issue I have with this place that my mom was not monitored or checked on enough that a few times the Co2 level (my mom is on a ventilator) that was found when checking her blood gases was critically high. I knew within seconds of entering her room my moms condition changed from smiling at me and coherent with in 24 hours to lethargic and not coherent.  I am infuriated none of the respiratory therapists or nurses picked up on this critical change.  A few days ago, before my mom was leaving, I had called Jennifer, the director of nursing to discuss these issues and later had received a return call from someone other than her. Should I have expected anything more? Probably not. I am so happy and blessed to wash our hands of this horrible place.

This place is awful!  Do not send your loved one there.  The staff, including the doctors, are culturally incompetent.  The doctors and nurses were pushing us to put my dad in a nursing home, and we stood our ground and said no way.  When he was finally discharged, this crazy nurse by the name of Becky Poetz refuse to let us go unless we went by ambulance.  We said that we did not need an ambulance and we will not pay for one.  She was so nasty and literally held my 82 year-old father hostage.  We a few weeks later, we got a bill and it was taken to collection.  Thanks Select Specialty Hospital for your rude, unprofessional and patronizing behavior.
