With the Nature's Reserve, it's an interesting ecological area. I read that there's like over 200 migrating birds that make this stop a temporary home. It's a sight to see when the ducks and geese start making their way in at dusk. Many come in real low. I've seen some amazing white and gray Heron - So beautiful!  
The vegetation is ever constantly changing.   
If you just stay on the main trail and  not wonder off too much, you should be  OK. 
 So if you think you'd like a little nature hike in the  city, the Sepulveda Basin can capture you in the unexpected.

Balboa Park is a nice man made lake and recreation area. It is amazing how many great under utilized parks there are in SoCal, I would count this among those. It has lush rolling green hills a kin to a golf course with character , it has a surprising amount of space to be within this densely populated an area. I would recommend , it's a nice spot to stop and feed the ducks or have picnic.

Beautiful open space in the middle of the San Fernando Valley.  Great for walking the dog, jogging or a casual walk.  A fair amount of homeless camps around.  They kept to themselves and didn't bother me at all.

A very nice place to bike, or run.  There is a lot to do(I took an Archery class) and they even have a designated place to fly Radio Controlled planes and drones.  It's fun to see the planes flying while you are enjoying the park.  They also have these trees that get fragrant purple flowers.  

I take visitors here to relax when they come to visit.

It’s nice to walk around the lake. Very relaxing. I saw lots of wild life.  People come to walk, run, barbecue etc.
