Went for breakfast this morning to Shatley Springs. The oldest documented family style restaurant in America. They proved for breakfast what they have proved for lunch and dinner since 1890.They are the best at every entree.Every side dish.Southern living magazine said they are the single best restaurant in America. A bold statement. But every time I go there they prove it is true.Every dish is made the old school hard way.And you can taste it.There is a reason they have stayed in business through three different centuries in a remote location. Because people will travel to taste perfection done the hard way.No matter how much you pay for a meal.Any meal.It won't be as good as Shatley Springs. Once you taste their time honored tradition of making food the best way instead of the quick way you will be back.

I give two stars only because when we finally got food it was good. Maybe it was so good because we were starving after our two hour wait. Arrived at 230 on a Saturday afternoon. We were rudely asked by the person taking names if we had a reservation. When we told her no she informed us it would be at least a 90 minute wait. After the 90 minutes passed and we noticed other people being seated in front of us, I inquired about our seating status. The lady calling names said "you must be on the other list". I informed her we had been waiting over 90 minutes already and asked how many lists there were. She then conveniently found our name two pages back on the list. She told us it would be a few more minutes. In a few minutes she seated us in a mostly empty dining room, but apparently according to another staff member 30 minutes later, we had not been assigned a waitress. Once we got service our server was curtious but did not offer us all the options on the family style menu. In conclusion, this is a destination restaurant. It is not near or on the way to anywhere. It will be a very long time, if ever, before this party of 2 tries to dine there again.

This place is the prefect example of "down home cooking". Breakfast is phenomenal and they serve huge groups of people just they way you would be served at a family event. The all you can eat can get price at almost 19 dollars a person. My wife and I ordered lunch plates instead for 8.50 each. So for 18 dollars we left more than full.

The service was good, but we did have a reservation and we're therefore seated relatively quickly. The food was okay, but not as outstanding as I had heard. In terms of quantity of food, it gets an outstanding (we got family style for all 29 of us). In terms of quality or options, it was mediocre.

We visited while in the area over the July 4th holiday weekend. It was incredibly busy and we waited for about an hour to get a table for a family of 5. Thankfully the rockers on the porch were a comfy place to wait. Food: We opted for the family style breakfast which included biscuits, gravy, cinnamon apples, one pancake per person, bacon, sausage, ham, scrambled eggs, fried potato wedges, and grits for just about $11 per adult (with coffee, juice). Everything was decent but the items that stood out the most were the biscuits, bacon and potato wedges. We also tried the "red eyed gravy" on potatoes and sausage which was unique and tastier than we expected. Service: Our server was very sweet but either she or the kitchen lost our ticket so we ended up waiting at least twice as long as tables seated after we were. She tried to make up for it but was bogged down with several larger tables. Bottom line: Breakfast was decent and we would consider giving lunch or dinner a try next time we're in the area.
