I was referred to Sheafe St Books by a friend, and I am sure glad I stopped by!  Tucked down a side street very near the hustle and bustle of Portsmouth, it provided a much needed respite.  What an atmosphere owner Ken has created - serene, quiet, intellectual - I wanted to spend the entire day there!  Lots of interesting books to peruse, and I came away with an arm full!

Ken and his furry companion, Petunia, have created a delightful, warm, cozy, and relaxed bookstore. A place that has something for everyone and is hidden from the main drag. It is truly one of Portsmouth's best kept secrets.

It's not very big, I've walked past it not knowing it was there, right around the corner from Ceres Bakery. It's got a small selection of used books but the selection appears to be carefully chosen as their as not bad authors, the subject matter and genres have a wide enough selection to keep most voracious readers happy and the books are in good to new-like condition.

I love this little bookstore. It's packed with great titles and the intimate, authentic feel of the place makes me want to spend time there. The owner is personable and helpful, and my impression is that every book on the shelves is carefully selected by someone who loves books. Twice when I bought books there the owner told me a little story related to the book (i.e., the children's book that belonged to his daughter and the time he met Toni Morrison), which makes the books seem just a little more special.
