First of all, the gas cashier and the service station are separate businesses. That said - this review is for the service station. I am a transplant to the Bay Area from a small town in the Midwest. I have had the same mechanic since I got my driver's license. I have such a strong relationship with my mechanic, I said goodbye to the whole shop when I moved to California. Needless to say, I've been nervous about finding a reputable, reliable mechanic since. I commute to work everyday - 30 miles one way, and made the mistake of trying out a service station near my house. I needed new brakes and after scoping out a place in my neighborhood I gave them a try. They charged me $400 for pads and rotors on the front. They didn't feel any more effective than my old brakes, and they squeaked and squealed. After a week, I took my car back in. They said they cleaned them, lubed them, and fixed the problem. A week later, the problem came back. I tried them again. Same answer, same result. Obviously, I was done with that place. Enter Tommy at Shell on the Alameda. I explained my problem, asked him what to do, and he said he'd inspect them for free, tell me what the first place did, and how to fix the problem. He did just that - he inspected the brakes, found cheap ceramic brake pads and that the rear rotors needed to be replaced. He gave me a full estimate of the labor and parts, and offered guaranteed quiet brake pads. Just to be sure, I called my mechanic back home for a sounding board. He agreed, and said any reputable mechanic who is worth using will only put on guaranteed quiet brake pads and rotors. So I called Tommy back and said lets do it. He was communicative, forth-coming, and fast. He fixed my brakes that same day, was friendly, and showed me the cheap pads that had been put on my car, as well as the new pads and rotors he used. He gave me a detailed receipt and explanation, and he stuck to his estimate. He cleaned all the rotors, removed and buffed away rust that was causing issues, and made sure everything was smooth. He checked the rest of my car for a tune up, and without being pushy, recommended some service I might need soon. When I got back in my car and drove away, my car drove like it had new tires, not just new brakes. Whatever he did - I am beyond happy. I never write reviews, but this time I couldn't help it. I highly recommend this mechanic, and that's not something that I say lightly. Definitely using him for all the service my car needs going forward. Thanks Tommy!
