Story

Dr. Matthew Westcott Downey grew up in Coventry, Rhode Island and upon completing his training and moving to southern Rhode Island a few years ago has opened his private Pediatric Dental practice in beautiful Narragansett, RI. Dr. Downey attended the University of Rhode Island earning his undergraduate BS degree in Biological Sciences before moving to Boston and completing his DMD degree from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 2008. He extended his training doing a one year Post Graduate Residency Program in Advanced Education in General Dentistry in Hawaii through Lutheran Medical Center. It was in Hawaii he found a pediatric dentist who served as his mentor and allowed him many opportunities treating children and experiencing first hand how challenging and yet rewarding it can be. The difference he could make in their lives made him realize he wanted to become a pediatric dentist. Dr. Downey decided to pursue his training in children's dentistry at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York where he completed his two year postgraduate residency program in Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry in 2011 earning his pediatric specialty certificate. Dr. Downey is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. He is a member of the American Dental Association, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the Rhode Island Dental Association and the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. He has also been on the hospital medical staff at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital in RI since 2011, and is an active part time attending faculty member at St. Joseph Hospital Pediatric Dental Center overseeing pediatric dental residents in training at this location through Lutheran Medical Center. When Dr. Downey is not practicing dentistry he enjoys spending time with his wife Julie and their two children Max and Evelyn.
