Southington Public Library

Story

Southington Public Library, now known as the Southington Historical Center, is a historic building at 239 Main Street in Southington, Connecticut. The building was constructed in 1902 in a Classical Revival style with glazed terra cotta brick and granite and an original capacity for 6,000 books. Local mill owner and dairy farmer, Lucius V. Walkley, donated half the cost of the building when it opened, and Emma Bradley Yeomans Newell, another entrepreneur, left a bequest upon her death in 1917 for an addition to the library, which was constructed in 1930. In 1974 a new library building was constructed further down Main Street, and the Southington Historical Society took over control of the original library building. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.Southington Historical SocietyThe Southington Historical Society is located in the Southington Historical Center. The Society preserves the history of the town and the surrounding area, including the stewardship for the historic South End Schoolhouse and the West Street Schoolhouse. The Society hosts exhibits, lectures, programs and fundraisers. Displays include photos, area sports and school mementos, industry and business items, and military artifacts.

Went here for the first time to try to get some studying done. Between the screaming children, the loud staff, phones ringing ridiculously loud, I won’t be back. I think I lasted 10 minutes here. What happened to a library being quiet?

The study area is located directly over the children's area. It gets noisy when there are activities going on. I think they should rethink this as far as set up. Very hard to study in a not so quiet place. Even staff members and parents are having loud conversations and I am not sure that they are aware that the sound echos upward into the study area. If I return, I will be sure to bring my headphones.

Loud inside, even in the quiet area. More of a community center than a place where you can work

I have been to many other libraries throughout the state and can say that they all have their challenges... sometimes overworked and underpaid shows itself. I have been going to Southington library for well over 15 years, but no less than weekly in the past 13 years. The staff is helpful and pleasant. I went their with my son since he was one/two for reading groups, mommy and me, presentations (puppets) and of course reading. The library has always been clean, warm and welcoming. This is one of my favorite places to be... my husband and I spend a lot of time there and really enjoy it. They also have a used book store (great deals on books) as well as art displays and discounted museum, or activity passes throughout the state.
