Story

Steak ‘n Shake was founded in February, 1934 in Normal, Illinois. Gus Belt, Steak ‘n Shake’s founder, pioneered the concept of premium burgers and milk shakes. The Steak 'n Shake name has been symbolic of its heritage. The word “steak” stood for STEAKBURGER. The term “shake” stood for hand-dipped MILK SHAKES. Gus was determined to serve his customers the finest burgers and shakes in the business. To prove his point that his burgers were exceptionally prime, he would wheel in a barrel of steaks (including round, sirloin, and T-bones) and grind the meat into burgers right in front of the guests. Hence arose the origin of our famous slogan, “In Sight It Must Be Right.” After 79 years, we are continuing Steak n Shake’s tradition of serving the country’s best, freshest, and tastiest burgers and shakes.

Food is outstanding. My favorite place to eat, hands down. A drink, fries, and a sandwich/burger will cost you less than $6, and the quality of food is beyond its fast food competitors. Service is great most of the time, but the service does fall when it's late at night or weekends when it gets pretty busy. There's rarely ever a wait for a table and the food is served within 15 minutes. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Bathrooms are clean for the most part. 10/10 would eat again.

My friends and I call this place Steak and Bad Service. At this point, the attraction of this place is knowing you'll be there for hours. It's truly a spectacle to behold. I've been coming here on and off for almost 10 years, 95% of the time it takes forever for anything, even the drive thru. You'll walk in, and on a good day it'll take you 10 minutes to be seated unless the place is literally empty. You'll be asked about 20-30 minutes later what you want to drink. Those drinks will take about 15 minutes to get to you. Then you'll order food (maybe, if they ask right when the drinks are brought) then you'll be waiting on food for about 30 minutes on a good day. Then after you're done, you'll walk up to the register and pay. It'll take about 10 minutes for someone to ring you up. Honestly, the food and shakes are good and cheap. Open 24 hours. And the wait staff is usually kinda nice. I just don't understand why everything takes so long. Even to clean up tables it takes hours. I once was seated next to a bunch of tables that weren't cleaned yet. I had my entire dining experience (mind you, this takes a long time due to wait times) and when I left the tables still weren't cleaned... I really don't get it lol.

4 November 3017 The burgers taste really good, but the meat is very very thin, so they make it look big by adding large lettuce and tomatos and onions, but the meat is the thickness of a greeting card, but the taste is good. French fries are also very thin like In & Out Burgers in California. Fries are the size of shoe strings. The shakes are the best because the make a lot of tastes.

Did an online order. Went in to pick up my food (which was ready at the time), and was told that the 2 milkshakes weren't ready yet. Sounded fine to me since I could spare 5 minutes for my 2 milkshakes which should've already be done. WAITED FOR ALMOST AN HOUR. Even after COUNTLESS times of asking for updates on different waitresses on the 2 shakes. I even saw the guy making milkshakes do 20+ and also some carryout ones too before mine came. I'm incredibly disgusted at how low of a priority web orders are at this establishment. If you have a place to be, this is not a quick stop for you. Absolutely unbelievable.

Cheap food that tastes good. Staff is friendly and our waitress was great. Parking is always avilable. Never had a problem with it being too crowded. Shakes are so good and burgers come with fries. Cleana and bright lighting , thumbs up!
