Stone State Park

Story

Stone State Park is a state park of Iowa, USA, located in the bluffs and ravines adjacent to the Big Sioux River. The park consists of 1069acre in Woodbury and Plymouth Counties near Sioux City, and overlooks the South Dakota-Iowa border. Stone Park is near the northernmost extent of the Loess Hills, and is at the transition from clay bluffs and prairie to sedimentary rock hills and bur oak forest along the Iowa side of the Big Sioux River. A variety of prairie plants can be found on the steep slopes and ridges, including yucca, penstemon, rough blazing star, silky aster, and pasque flower. Wild turkey, white-tailed deer, coyote, and red fox are found in the park. Birdlife includes the turkey vulture, barred owl, rufous-sided (eastern) towhee, and the ovenbird. Exposed bedrock in the park is composed of lignite, shale, sandstone, and limestone, and dates to the Cretaceous period; it is rich in marine fossils. The park contains many miles of hiking and equestrian trails, and is a popular destination for day visitors, overnight campers, mountain bike enthusiasts, and picnickers.

Love this place because it is mostly woods. Small campground, but lots of trails! Great place to spend a day, a week, or a month!

I love this park. We had many Pagan rituals here because of how well it preserves nature, while accommodating easy access and parking.great views. Great trails. Great spaces. Amazing park.

I went to Morningside College back in the day and visited the Stone State Park during my study times. Fall colors are a breath of fresh air and rejuvenates. Dakota Point look out is a must if you visit this area. There are rails and lodge and parking available and a nature center. It is located in the Loess Hills along the Big Sioux River. The only other place where loess soiled exist are found in China; so save the plane ticket price and stay here in Iowa. There are some enormous oak trees in the Park. On a sad note, the last known wild buffalo was shot in this park years ago. there are a few off road opportunities for horseback riding and mountain biking trekking, watch the trails when approaching horse riders and be respectful. Reservations for camping in the park should be looked over in advance. Overall it is a nice place to get away, but expect to come in contact with other like minded visitors. The highlight of this park is the fall colors and views overlooking the park. In fact you can see three states at once at the look out.

This is a large beautiful park. Very hilly, with big trees, winding roads, lots of hiking trails and picnic areas. There are a few playground areas for kids. It isn't an overnight camping park, though there are couple of small primitive cabins that can be rented in the non-winter months. There is also a lovely lodge that can rented for daytime groups to meet. The park is closed all winter as plowing snow on those steep winding roads would be quite difficult and damaging the to road surface. However winter hiking is allowed and provides a real wilderness experience. There are several high viewing spots that can be reached by car or on foot.
