I reserved a storage unit online for $69.99 a month with the first month's rent free. When I arrived at the facility to sign the rental agreement, the manager acknowledged that the website had reserved me a unit at the $69.99 rate but she wasn't able to process it through her computer. I ended up paying $85.00 a month without a free month's rent. I signed all the disclosures on the rental agreement and the manager pointed out (and asked me to initial) that I was covered by their insurance coverage for $2,000 worth of damage - but she did not mention either I needed to provide proof of my own insurance coverage or the facility would charge me an extra $15.00 a month for a policy. I did not find out I had been enrolled for a policy and was being charged until my first invoice arrived. I could have spent the time reading the four page agreement (with microscopic contract print) but I did not so that is my fault. I have rented storage units before and have no problem providing proof of insurance - it's a reasonable request for the facility to make. I just would have appreciated having it pointed out at the time I signed my agreement that I was going to be charged an extra fee. When I called the facility to talk about the extra charge and ask about the best way to provide proof of insurance (fax or email) all the manger could say to me was "it's in the agreement..." and did not even apologize for any kind of inconvenience. I only need storage for a short period of time - if I needed storage for more than a couple of months, I would move out immediately.
