About

Celebrating Our Heritage. Preserving Our Artifacts. Inspiring Learning.

Story

The SAC Aerospace Museum, located between Lincoln and Omaha near Interstate 80, utilizes over 300,000 square feet of exhibit, education, and event space to educate, inspire, and entertain its guests. Organized in 1959, the original mission of the museum was to commemorate the contributions of the Strategic Air Command, which until 1992 was headquartered at Offutt Air Force Base. The museum moved to its current location in 1998 upon completion of a new indoor facility. The museum houses an impressive collection of military aircraft and other artifacts, many of which have been restored in the museum’s on-site restoration facility. As part of its commitment to education, the museum has recently established a partnership with the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Office of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Education to provide cutting-edge educational opportunities for student, teachers, families, and adult learners. Traveling exhibits, permanent exhibits, and a variety of special events provide additional unique experiences for the museum’s members and visitors.

As a member of SAC during my military years I found this is a very interesting locale. There are a large number of aircraft that were associated with SAC in the US Air Force military operations. There were also various videos and interactive displays detailing the history of SAC and major events in the history of the military unit. Anyone who served in the Air Force more than military at that time will find this more than interesting. It is well worth the price of admission.

This museum is well worth a visit. It was better than we expected. In addition to a top-notch B-17, there were a lot of unique and personally-interesting exhibits. Planes I've seen nowhere else included a huge B-36 and a tiny XF-85 fighter/escort designed to be released from a "parent" bomber (an unsuccessful experiment, ultimately). As a kid, my dad saw a wing tank fall off of a jet fighter in Corpus Christi, TX. When I saw the F-84 Thunderjet at the museum, I realized for the first time that it must have been the fighter my dad had spoken of so many years ago. That was cool. Our favorite part of the visit was a tour given by a volunteer who had piloted B-36s and B-52s. It's not every day, or every visit to a museum, that you get to hear first-hand stories that bring the planes to life. The way he remembered the men he had lost was very touching. I highly recommend taking the tour if you can.

Yes I agree this place is all about the Cold war, a time the world was in constant fear of nuclear annihilation. Yes there is no reason to glorify these billion dollar machines of mass destruction. Inspite of all these, if for a moment we can forget the Political stupidity of the era, what stands before us is marvelous example of the scientific and engineering advancement made by the mankind where technology has been pushed to it's limits. One can't deny the goosebumps felt when standing beneath the wings of a B-52 Stratofortress, awestruck by this behemoth of the skies. Though technology like these had originally been developed for sinister reasons, it finally trickled down to the civilian world and makes modern day air travel possible, and thus I think it's worth a visit. P.S.- The museum also has a gallery about local astronaut Clayton Anderson, so it's not about all things military.

The Robotics program was great for Boy Scouts. We brought Boy Scouts from Gardner, Kansas to this and had a great time. Fun and interactive program. Setting the historic aircraft was amazing. Thank you for offering this program to educate out Boy Scouts.

One of the best aerospace museums I have ever been to! It's nice because it's all covered and there is quite a selection to view. Also one of the best places to see an SR-71 Blackbird in the country. Defiantly go on the guided tour because the vets that run them have so much knowledge and can give you some inside stories you won't hear anywhere else!
