Story

History

The force formed on May 1, 2000, bringing together experienced police officers from the three smaller forces. Today, SARPD has a $7.2 million operating budget, 51 full-time officers and serves a total population of 34,620 in one of the fastest growing areas of the Commonwealth.

With its 49 police officers, Stroud Area Regional Police Department (SARPD) is the largest regional department in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Their coverage area comprises the 39 square mile area including the boroughs of Stroudsburg and East Stroudsburg and the Township of Stroud.

Within that region, SARPD’s service area includes county and federal offices, schools, an ever-expanding hospital, East Stroudsburg University with students living off-campus, easy access to the area from busy Interstate 80, and more.

As the regional department formed, administration and patrol services worked in Stroud Township, while the detective division worked in East Stroudsburg. In December of 2003, divisions came together with the opening of the new SARPD headquarters at 100 Day Street in East Stroudsburg, now home to the entire operation.

This regional department also provides services such as public speaking, criminal activity surveys, missing person searches, foot patrols, senior citizen assistance, speed enforcement, and courtroom security and prisoner transports—to name a few.

Philosophy of Community Policing

Community Policing is based on the concept that the police need to establish a partnership with the community they serve and work closely with citizens on crime and disorder problems that impact the quality-of-life in the community.

Since it's inception. the Stroud Area Regional Police Department has made a commitment to the philosophy of community policing and has made significant strides in implementing this philosophy throughout the organization.

Police departments that implement the philosophy of community policing with the strategy of problem-solving are more prepared to address the full range of social disorder, and/or crime problems, that may exist with the goal of enhancing the quality-of-life in the community. By identifying these conditions in advance, the department can prepare strategies and responses that are more likely to solve the problem. The problem-solving process S.A.R.A. (scanning, analyzing, response, and assessment) is made more effective through the relationship between citizens and officers.

I agree with below ticketing problem it's something I've called about many times no tickets are given to those who block hydrants and park people in on their own street. The excuse I was given is that there is only 2 traffic officers well if I call the police why don't the police give the tickets? They don't even come when I call saying I'm parked in by someone blocking the road with a clearly marked sign saying no parking. They just don't seem to care. Also in regards to noise complaints they have shown up over 10 times to the same home for noise complaints but still no ticket is given. Why is that? Are they unable to write tickets for noise after 12midnight are they afraid to write the tickets? I'm struggling to understand this and the obviously overlooked drug dealing that we have called about many times. I know there is a process for everything but these guys cut WAY too much slack on the crime around here.

I think the Stroudsburg police need to ticket illegally parked cars when they see them and especially if a citizen calls them regarding such and not make the citizen feel like they are "bothering" the pollice with the call. When a car is parked illegally the driver is breaking the law. Why are the police letting them off the hook and not ticketing them? I refer to a call made this evening regarding a car on Wallace Street between Scott and Thomas. The owner came out to move it while the policman was there and so he got off without being fined. The car owner admitted he was parked there for over an hour. People that break the law should have to be responsible for their actions. The policeman should not lack the conviction to uphold the law in order to be "Mr. Nice Guy".

I have called SARP about 4 times in three years - from college age kids fighting to an intoxicated person passed out and bleeding in the street and they have always been professional and courteous. Not sure about other post, but I was ticketed when parked illegally once even though I had come out to move my truck.
