Heading West out of the city of Lompoc you eventually come to Surf Station on the coast. Crossing the tracks from the parking lot brings you to Surf Beach. The Amtrack trains stop at Surf Station when there are passengers getting on or off. Otherwise it zips through. Just South of the station is South Base gate of Vandenburg Air Force Base. Almost within sight of the parking lot are several rocket-launching pads, one of which, at one time, was planned to launch the Space Shuttle
