One of the best Omakaske’s I’ve ever had. They were accommodating to some of the items I don’t eat like shrimp, which I appreciated. The toro was . Truly some of the best cuts of fish in NYC They only had a small selected of wines and sake Great location in Soho, which is hard to find for this quality of sushi. Setting was intimate, quiet, and seating around 12 people max
It is funny to discuss cost-effectiveness in expensive sushi restaurants, but sushi Ikumi's ingredients definitely use high-quality ingredients compared to the price. The chef's nigiri skills are good; its trustable. "Sushi Ikumi" is a restaurant that I often go to with "Sushi Nakazawa" that serves high-quality food at a low price range Compared to other restaurants in the same price range. Therefore I strongly recommended for sushi lovers.
This was an interesting sushi place where everything EXCEPT the sushi was amazing. We got 3 non-sushi appetizers at the beginning, which I thought were some of the best, delicately put together small-dishes ever. Then came the sushis, and after the first bite, I knew it was going to be a night of disappointment. First, the rice was EXTREMELY undercooked: in fact it was very hard. This is quite unforgivable for an omakase place at this price point. The funny thing is - they changed the rice batch later and it was better, which made me confident that they actually completely screwed up their first batch. Next, the fish pieces themselves were neither fresh nor tasty nor had any sort of creative twist. I was very surprised to taste a bit of the bad fishiness in most pieces. And lastly, the combination of fish and rice was horrible as well. There was too little rice to harmonize with the fish. I'm just overall in utter shock at how horrible the sushi was. After the sushi, the miso soup had some very deep sea fragrance, and I thought it was one of the best miso soup I've ever had. And to wrap it up, the in-house made peach ice cream was also actually the best ice cream I've ever had. To wrap it up, the non-sushi dishes that I suspect are inherited from Hirohisa were absolutely amazing and so were the service, but the main sushi were definitely one of the worst I've ever had. Given it's high price point to compete against other omakases such as Nakazawa, I do not recommend this place.
For the price and quality, I'd argue it's the best omakase in the city. The 18 course meal offered an incredible range of fish flown in from Japan including my personal favorites, kohada and striped jack. Staff were very friendly and helped us choose a great sake. Looking forward to returning.
Chef Jon uplifted my understanding in one of the best omakase experience ever!!! Needless to say, the fresh ingredients were just bursting umami bombs and dancing on your tongue. Chef Jon cracked a few jokes in between courses and elevated the entire dining experience. Surely I can't drop $300+ on food every other weekend but I will definitely come back here again. This was a night to remember !
Great sushi counter to experience Omakase. Thoughtful use of ingredients with a subtle approach to flavours, and the result is a very enjoyable Omakase. An added perk for dinners who visits while capacity limits are in place, is that you end up having a really intimate dining experience, where Chef Jon can share his thougts and approach on each course. Thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Some of aged mackerel and sardines sushi s the chef introduced were rotten, all of us got diarrhea after the meal. One of worst part was this favoritism chef treated beyond to other customers who’s from same origin sitting next to us. We were not so happy to see his cronyism and inequality all the time in front of the open kitchen. Never come back again.
A very special experience wish I could remember everything we were served but some highlights were homemade plum wine, Japanese hair crab sushi, and strawberry with panna cotta
Extraordinarily fresh and delightful omakase for only $180 pp! The fish was excellent but the real winner was their homemade ice cream. So delicious and pure!
Whoever says this place is good has definitely not had good sushi. Go to sushi Nakazawa and yoshino a few times and then come back to compare. All sushi was not fresh, sometimes not fully defrosted, there was no twist such as smoking or searing the fish, the rice was undercooked, I could go on. The people were very nice but it is not good sushi especially not for the price point it’s at.
