Story

When my wife and I opened this restaurant in 1996, we hoped to create a place where families and friends could come, enjoy themselves, and eat well.

Here at Sweet Basil's Cafe, we take great pride in what we create. Our coffee is Certified Fair Trade and Organic. Our dairy is hormone-free and farm-fresh natural. Our produce is fresh, never frozen, and our meats are 100% hormone-free. We offer vegetarian options for our breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner menus.

Sweet Basil's is also available to service your catering needs. We do off-site catering as well as on-site private parties at the restuarant. We specialize in bridal showers, baby showers, and other private parties at our West Orange, NJ location.

My first time at Sweet Basil was good,  but could have been much better.  First,  we walked in and there was no host stand and it didn't look like any of the customers knew what was going on as they waited in front of the entrance door; I had no idea either and when I went to ask someone at the bar she dismissed me like I was bothering her. Second, my partner ordered the chicken and waffles and the chicken tasted old and dry (I even tasted some of his),  like they froze it and fried it like a McDonald's would. The overall service left A LOT to be desired.  They can do better. My food was good (I had the down home country breakfast) and so was my friends (he had the pulled pork benedict).

We stopped in without a reservation, but luckily got seating for two. By the time we left, the place was full.  Dinner was delicious, fish for me.  The portions generous.  Staff were very friendly and attentive.  It's byob. Definitely trying again!  Went again in Sept.  Not as good as first experience.  Food just okay and staff not as friendly.  Would go one more time to see which was the off day.

Took my grandmother out to eat here the night before Thanksgiving and she had a delicious codfish dish. I had a beet salad with shrimp which was really good, but it was drowned in dressing, so I  would order on the side next time. Chill environment and kid friendly. I'd go again.

We went there for new years day brunch as a large group of 12 people. Their service was very pleasing. Loved the Omelettes, pancakes and French toast. The hueveos Ranchero was a bit bland to my liking but the overall experience was super good.

Had the steak frittes and the mac and cheese; both were absolutely delicious. Very quick and courteous service. Would totally recommend.
