I am honestly surprised with the number of positive reviews for Tavern on the Main. We have eaten here several times and each time the food has been blah and overpriced for the quality.  The dishes sound better on the menu than they taste. This last visit will be our last visit.  My son couldn't finish his Maine Mac n cheese and didn't care to bring it home. But my husband's dish was unacceptable. He got the Seafood casserole. After eating 1 shrimp and a piece of cold lobster, he realized that the fillet of fish underneath was raw. Seriously, cold and mushy-raw. How does that even happen. We are not the type to complain, and would usually just eat the food despite the taste or quality. But he had to send it back. They brought him as new one, minus the 1 shrimp and chunk of lobster.  
On a positive note, the atmosphere is nice and the staff is friendly.  But we found a new favorite place to eat.

This place is great because it is truly an antique. The main dining room has a Lord of the Rings tavern feel to it. The food is given in large portions and has great flavor. I love the baked stuffed lobster among other things. They have homemade soups which are amazing. As an example, they had vegetable soup one night (which I don't like because usually there isn't much flavor to it) but I decided to try it and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. They also have different breads to taste with a variety of flavored butters. The option of butter packets are also offered for those less adventurous. Tavern on Main earns its 5 stars for food and atmosphere.

Fantastic food, great service, wonderful atmosphere!  4 of us ordered different meals and ALL 4 were out of this world.  Portions are giant, fresh vegetables, home made mashed potatoes, fresh seafood, the steak tips melted in you mouth!  Every meal come with soup, salad & warm bread. YOU NEED TO COME EAT HERE!  You may need  to make a reservation but DO IT!

Dinner for two was a great deal the food was fantastic and the service was great. Only slight disapointment was the chicken tender appetizer only had 3 pieces while the mussels were a whole plate full. A minor complaint.

One of my favorite restaurants. Delicious food and strong drinks in a very laid-back and old-fashioned environment. They are very busy during peak times, so reservations are highly recommended. The parmesan encrusted chicken is my favorite. The portion size has gotten smaller over the years, and the price higher, but overall a decent amount for the price. There are several antique and country stores in walking distance from here, so it's a nice place for a lunch and a stroll during warmer weather.
