Story

The Barnacle Historic State Park is a 5acre Florida State Park in the Coconut Grove neighborhood of Miami, Florida at 3485 Main Highway.Built in 1891, it is the oldest house in its original location in Miami-Dade County. The Barnacle was the home of Ralph Middleton Munroe, one of Coconut Grove’s founders, as well as founder and Commodore of the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club. He was also a leading designer of sailing yachts. The Florida Park Service acquired the remaining 5acre of Munroe's original 40acre homesite from his descendants in 1973.The Barnacle Historic State Park is served by the Miami Metrorail at the Douglas Road and the Coconut Grove stations.HistoryRalph Middleton Munroe first visited South Florida in 1877 while on vacation from New York City. On his second trip he brought his wife who suffered from tuberculosis. Unfortunately, the cure failed and she died. Her body is buried in Coconut Grove. He returned several times to the area and in 1887 decided to settle in the Bay.Ralph Munroe purchased 40acre of bayfront land in 1886 for $400 in addition to one of his sailboats, the Kingfish, valued at an additional $400. His boathouse was built in 1887 and he lived on its upper floor until his main house was completed in 1891. The house, a one-story structure, was raised off the ground on wood pilings. Its central room is octagonal in shape and Munroe called his home "The Barnacle," presumably because it resembled one. It remained a bungalow until 1908 when more space was needed for his growing family. The whole structure was lifted and a new first story inserted below. In 1912 a library was built adjacent to the house. The Barnacle survived the disastrous 1926 hurricane and Hurricane Andrew in 1992 with only minimal damage.

I wouldn't drive too far out of my way to visit here, don't expect too much. if you happen to be in the area it's a nice little shady retreat to learn a bit about some south Miami history and boat building... The neighborhood is safe, trendy and upscale. The price to enter is a suggested $2.00 per person, (your meter on the street might cost you more).

This is a beautiful public park and a great get away to sit outside and have a picnic. They also have many well directed events.

The barnacle Park is part of the Miami tourist and cultural route. 19 century home of Middleton Monroe one of Coconut Grove'most influential residents. This is one of the oldest houses in Miami Dade. Stilling its original location. Peaceful, beautiful view and botanical garden.

An oasis of peaceful nature hidden amidst the busy pace of the Grove. I take the girl I nanny there frequently to look at the water and run around. Small, but pleasant.

The Barnacle is a historic home built in 1891. It was home to Ralph Middleton Munroe, one of Coconut Grove's most influential pioneers. The home offers a glimpse of life, when all travel to and from Miami was by boat. Munroe sought to preserve the forest on his land, and cut out a small trail through the hammock, barely wide enough for one vehicle. Today, the property contains many large, old trees. The home is left in its natural state, and appears much as it did in Munroe's days. The Barnacle is a great place to enjoy a picnic on the lawn, a tour through the hammocks, rocking in the chairs in the front porch, or a family night at one of their shows. Watch the sailboats go by and take a picnic basket. This site is definitely for the history buffs and peace and quiet seekers. I come here with my boyfriend and roam around. It is very peaceful. We take a blanket with some food and some wine and just chill while taking photos of the historic home. Cute getaway.
