Story

OUR STORY:
Begun in 1978 by the inimitable Anita Raskin who passed away in 2002, the expanded Book Lady Bookstore continues to offer a broad range of gently used, rare, out-of-print and also new books. Joni Saxon-Giusti, who worked at The Book Lady with Mrs. Raskin for many years, purchased and revamped the business in 2002 and has overseen the exponential growth and relocation of the shop. We are proud to be still serving our community, and are very active with Savannah's Flannery O'Connor Childhood Home, the Poetry Society of Georgia, the Southern Poetry Review, Georgia Historical Society, Wormsloe Foundation, Seersucker Live, and the annual Savannah Book Festival. So if you don't see us in the shop, you'll probably see us selling books somewhere around town!

WHAD'YA GOT?:
Every day we hear our customers say, "This is an amazing store! It looks just like an old bookstore should!", and we agree. Located in the heart of Savannah's historic district at 6 E. Liberty Street, the cozy shop currently is loaded to the ceiling with 50,000 books, both fiction and nonfiction, hardbacks and paperbacks, in over 40 genres. Our rooms of books include (among many others) an extensive collection of Georgia and Southern history, art, architecture and photography, literary biography, classics, women's studies, military history, foreign places and travel memoirs, small press, poetry, drama, philosophy, African-American, children's, gardening, sports, religion, McSweeney's issues, science and nature, and cookbooks. We also have a great and varied collection of first editions, signed, and rare titles.

All books are hand-picked by the shop's proprietor, and reflect an appreciation of great literature and quirky, hard-to-find histories. We offer an out-of-print search service and advice (maybe too much!) from our knowledgeable staff, but our best service is in giving an unforgettable book lover's experience where customers are invited to browse for that serendipitous find, and to stay and linger beside one of our two fireplaces, have a cup of coffee with the New York Times, and meet other book lovers. As for our philosophy, we ascribe to what the historian Barbara Tuchman said, "Books are the carriers of civilization. Without books, history is silent, literature dumb, science crippled, thought and speculation a a standstill."

OUR SERVICES:
The shop hosts occasional author readings, special EVENTS and art exhibitions, and customers are encouraged to join our email list to receive current event announcements. The Book Lady BOOK CLUB has been going strong for over 5 years now. The reading list has included both fiction and nonfiction (more info. on the reading list and recommendations are in the Book Club album, & current dates and picks are included in the Upcoming Events Calendar); all enthusiastic and opinionated readers are encouraged to attend. We still offer the old fashioned SEARCH SERVICE for books, so whatever you need, old or new, we can get it for you, and we ship anywhere. GIFT CERTIFICATES are always available, in any amount. We also offer a BOOK REPAIR and rebinding service, so if that family heirloom has seen better days, we can help preserve it so you can enjoy it for many years to come. Our READING GARDEN is also a great place to take your book and lunch (or drinks and treats from our CAFE); it's right out our back door and has tables and chairs among the flowers. And don't forget to bring in your old BOOKS FOR CASH or credit; we're always looking for good titles in good condition. APPRAISALS of all kinds, for insurance, donation, or estate purposes, can be arranged by appointment, so please call the shop for more details. We don't mind giving an informal and gratis OPINION on the worth of an old book you found in the attic; just bring it by the shop to let us take a look.

SO WHEN CAN WE COME BY?:

Reviews
Good number of books and the place was pretty well ventilated. I looked through the used Science fiction and fantasy sections and found a few books to read while I was here. There was no musty order to the store which means their stock rotates a decent amount or they actually circulate air. They had a new section that I glanced through, but had a lot of local flavor books. Did not seem that worth it on those.

Used to be my go to spot when I went to SCAD. Went back recently when I was in town for a visit. Love that it is the same small staff since when I had graduated 10 years ago! Knowledgable owners and great selection. As an avid reader I appreciate the fact that if I have a question they have answers, otherwise I am left alone to explore the great selection. One of my favorite books stores in the states!

Small in size, but good quality and wide collection of used and new books. Good prices on used paperbacks.

A robust selection of books on the Vietnam War. The owner was friendly and knowledgeable. Left the store with four hard to find military history books. Wall paper of author pictures in the bathroom is a nice touch.

I absolutely adored this place, after talking to the person behind the counter, they helped me find a lovely book to take with me for my travels.
