The building was built in 1923, which, it seemed, is the year the beds in our room were purchased. Worst bed in my decades of travel. The shared bath had a door that didn't close and the lock was hanging uselessly from the wall. If you are not entirely fit, you won't be able to climb into the tub (I made it I am kind of proud to report). The downstairs toilet doesn't flush well, but the door does lock. I cannot comment on the food since breakfast is served only until 9 a.m. and after that rough night none of us were moving that early. I think the owners need to do some upgrades or rewrite the web copy that talks about civilized. Maine, itself, is wonderful.

According to it’s website, “The Brooklin Inn has five comfortable bedrooms, three with private baths. Each room is carefully appointed. A full breakfast is served daily, complimentary to our guests.” Let’s break this down, based on my stay in mid-July. While I don’t know about the other four bedrooms, if the one I stayed in was carefully appointed, it was with the goal of making your stay as painful as possible. And I mean this in the literal sense – both beds could generously be called torturous. One felt as if it was little more than springs covered by cardboard, and gave me more pain than I ever felt possible in my back. The room was cramped, with barely any space to move about between the two planks passing for beds. The outlets were in inconvenient places – which didn’t even matter that much, since not all of them worked. And if you’re unlucky enough to stay in one of the rooms without a private bathroom, kiss all thoughts of privacy goodbye. The shared bathroom has a door that does not even close all the way, let alone lock. I was tempted to make my own sign that said, “Occupied” after the door was opened on me while I was using it. And the full breakfast served daily? I hope you’re an early riser, even on vacation, since it is not served after 9:00am on Saturday or Sunday. The only thing worse than the lack of comfort and privacy was the complete and utter lack of customer service. When we attempted to bring our concerns to the owner, Don, we were met with defensiveness followed by belligerence. There was no apology, no, “Thank you for bring this to my attention,” no acknowledgement of any possible shortcoming with his accommodations. If you have any expectation of comfort, privacy, or service, leave them at the door. Hopefully it locks for you.

My husband and I had a fantastic meal here last week, best food in the region, in our opinion. The Inn is quaint and welcoming, the owner was welcoming and interesting and the meal was wonderful. Thanks for a super evening!
