Story

The Cedar Cultural Center, commonly known as The Cedar, is a non-profit performing arts organization and all-ages music venue that presents the best in local, national, and international music. The Cedar’s mission is to promote intercultural appreciation and understanding through the presentation of global music and dance. Reflecting its location in the diverse Cedar Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis, Minnesota, the venue is known for presenting a wide variety of global roots, folk, indie, experimental, bluegrass, Americana and blues artists, as well as artist residencies, educational programs, workshops, films, dances, comedy, spoken word and community events.

The Cedar is committed to artistic excellence and integrity, diversity of programming, support for emerging artists, and community outreach. The only venue of its kind in the Midwest, The Cedar hosts over 200 events each year including live music performances in all genres along with programming like the Cedar Commissions, a local artist commissioning series; the Global Roots Festival, a free annual world music festival; and Midnimo, a program that presents Somali artists in month-long residencies throughout Minnesota. The Cedar was established in 1989 and operates in a building that was constructed as a movie theater in 1948. The hall can be configured for seated concerts (450 capacity) as well as standing room concerts (625 capacity) and provides high-quality sound in an intimate concert environment, never putting the audience member more than 30 feet away from the stage.

This activity is made possible in part by a grant provided by the Minnesota State Arts Board through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature from the State's general fund and its arts and cultural heritage fund with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008, and a grant from the Wells Fargo Foundation Minnesota.

An immensely authentic west bank experience. A throwback that remains as vital as ever. Feels like seeing a show in your cool hippie neighbor's basement. Such good energy, so chill, so sincere, so warm. Will never not love a show at the Cedar. HEADS UP: some shows are seated (GA), some aren't; when it fills up for a show during warm weather it can get hotter than the dickens inside. PRO TIP: parking in UofM ramp is often pretty cheap!

When I asked for parking advice, the guy said "I don't know, check the signs." There weren't any signs posted around the lot we parked in which is why I asked for advice in the first place. This isn't exactly my first time parking in Minneapolis; I know to check for signs around where I park. We had 5 minutes before the show was supposed to start so my friend and I were debating whether or not we should just risk leaving my car where it was when the same guy said we had plenty of time to find parking. I told him we came out to see one specific comedian and he told us that there were a few guys performing before the headliner and once again reassured us that we had plenty of time. So we spent the next 20 minutes looking for a parking spot with signs indicating that it was safe to park there for a couple hours. By the time we got back, the guy we had come to see was 20 minutes into his set and all the seats were taken. There were probably a couple dozen people standing along the back wall. I paid for two seats and ended up standing in the back the whole time. The silver lining to accidentally being so late is that we didn't have to stand around for as long as we would have otherwise, but either way there's no chance I'll be coming back. If you don't have space for X amount of people at a show, don't sell that many tickets.

I came here to see a band in the middle of winter, until then I had never heard of this place before so didn’t know what to expect. Tickets for the show were inexpensive so that was a great start. Getting to the theatre, I was loving the big sign they have calling it out. Parking across the street in the garage was easy (but not free). Inside the stage is fairly small, although I was in at the last second I was really close to the stage. They had a giant coat rack for everyone’s coat in the corner which speaks about the size of this place. The folks serving drinks were really cool and friendly, smile from ear to ear. Overall this place is really pleasant and I know to expect a good time if I find myself here again.

The entertainment is very good. But they should change their method of allowing people in. They have one door for people with tickets and those with will call. There are two doors that are very close that could be assigned one for ticketed people and one for will-call to speed up the process. Otherwise you're standing outside in the cold or rain waiting to get in.

They bring in amazing acts bit the venue sucks. Like watching a concert in a high school gym. It makes me sad. I would definitely contribute to a capital campaign to remodel the place.
