Story

A stay at The Seelbach Hilton Hotel will never be described as ordinary. Appearing on the National Register of Historical Places, this 4-diamond luxury hotel is considered the premiere hotel in the state of Kentucky. Built in 1905, it is considered a landmark to "the golden era" with its grand ambiance inspiring author F. Scott Fitzgerald to use The Seelbach as a backdrop for Tom and Daisy Buchanan's wedding in The Great Gatsby.

And now a recent $12 million renovation has taken this grand old hotel and combined it with all of the contemporary necessities. So now, you can not only experience genteel, Southern hospitality in historic grandeur. You can do so in updated guestrooms with new furniture, lighting and carpet while watching 37" hi-def televisions and taking advantage of high-speed Internet access.

Add to that a location in the heart of downtown Louisville's business and entertainment district, and only minutes from Churchill Downs — the home of The Kentucky Derby where over 100,000 thoroughbred enthusiasts and international celebrities gather on the first Saturday in May each year — and there's simply no reason to consider staying anywhere else.

Our friends brought us here from out of town to show off this old, beautiful historic bar...a real gem in Louisville. SURPRISE! the hilton has gone all 'home depot rehab' and gotten rid of any historically identifying decor or charm. You can now sip cocktails amidst canned lighting, bathroom tiling on the bar, and a dozen TVs. Outstanding in its genericness. Somewhere F. Scott Fitzgerald is weeping. Drinks and service were decent enough if you're stuck here in a storm.

It's fine but it doesn't really have that much atmosphere as the walls have been whitewashed and/or wallpapered. It has a much more modern feel than I would have expected from other reviews. The drinks were fine. They did have an ok selection of bourbons including Weller. The bartender was able to discuss bourbon with tourists. Overall, it may be an ok bar for Louisville because I haven't been to a lot of Louisville bars. But I wouldn't go out of my way to come back here.

I work in the area and tried this place for after work drinks a few times... Never again. Atmosphere is fine, but the wait staff is not. The bartender walked around my friend and I for 10 minutes without even acknowledging our presence, then got my friend's order wrong when they finally did take our orders and bring our drinks. Took about an hour to get a hummus plate. I felt the whole time like I was inconveniencing our bartender. The drinks were good, though, so at least there's that. This is a horrible way to greet out of town tourists that are looking to explore our wonderful city. If this bar were my only experience in Louisville, I would not be very inclined to come back.

This is an historical bar in an historical hotel. The decor is mellow and inviting but also anticeptic feeling like they were trying too hard. The spirits list is extensive. Yet this failed to win me over. Service is so-so and the tables were a bit chintzy. A hundred years ago this place was probably amazing. Today it's just another a hotel bar that has a HUGE bourbon list only because it's in downtown Louisville.
