The Speed Art Museum

Story

The Speed Art Museum, originally known as the J. B. Speed Memorial Museum, is Kentucky’s oldest and largest art museum. It was founded in 1925 by Hattie Bishop Speed as a memorial to her husband, James Breckinridge Speed, a prominent Louisville businessman and philanthropist.

The Speed Art Museum recently reopened its doors after a three-year expansion project. The new 60,000-square-foot North Building creates one of the finest experiential art museums in the country and doubles the overall square footage and nearly triple the gallery space from the existing wing. The expansion creates a state-of-the-art space for larger special exhibitions, new contemporary art galleries, a family education welcome center, indoor/outdoor café, museum shop, theater, and a multifunctional pavilion for performances, lectures and entertaining. Additionally, the new Elizabeth P. and Frederick K. Cressman Art Park and public Piazza was created for the display of sculpture that will engage University of Louisville students and faculty and museum visitors.

Mission

Where art from around the world invites and inspires diverse audiences to experience the power of creativity.

I came as a chaperon for my Daughters High school Arts and Humanities class. It was a short visit but we had a wonderful time. We'll definitely be back as a family.

Very modern, spacious, and well, chock full of great classic and modern art. As a member, I've spent many days exploring the exhibits there. I love it!

I understand that the employees here want you to keep your children in control but I have to say they totally went overboard. I took my granddaughters and son, who are very well behaved. Had no problems with them at all but was followed throughout our entire time we were here!!! I was made to feel like we were doing something criminal!!! They never touched anything, ran, or misbehaved at ALL!!

We went on a Sunday afternoon so it was free and not very crowded. Nice museum. Enjoyed the different types of art. Nice small cafe.

Went on owesley sunday it was great. Parking was reasonable, museum was free, rested in the cafe after awhile and the service was great. Ran out of energy before I ran out of museum. So I need to go back and finish.
