I've been a few times now and have always enjoyed the serene environment, and excellent quality of my massage services, as well as the exceptional high class quality of customer service and interaction from staff through the spa areas.  This is hands down my favorite place to go to in the triangle.  

During my most recent visit, my friend and I enjoyed a massage, the sauna and the hot tub. I was ready to sleep afterwards!  I was so relaxed!

I highly recommend this place if you want to escape for a quiet self care day or gift a loved one a special pampering or stress melting experience.  While the price point is higher than what you can otherwise find a massage for at other places, the full day access to all the spa and gym facilities on the day of your service is what really makes it special and worth the price. I don't know of any other places in the area where you can get a massage and enjoy both gender separate and coed spaces to relax in, showers, steam room, sauna and a whirlpool hot tub all included in the price.  If you take full advantage of the spa, it is definitely worth the price!! 

I also highly recommend going early, before your massage service, to use the hot tub, sauna or steam room to warm up your muscles beforehand.  You'll get even more out of your massage!

Hotel room and staff was very nice. I removed a star because there was a $300 dinning charge added to my room which I did not make. The staff removed it at checkout, but a week later the charge was added to my card! Good thing I check my bill. FYI, I barely received any cell phone signal (T-Mobile) during my stay.

star dining served with a smile! They have a great tea time in the afternoon. The different rooms are themed. There is a bar and lounge for dining at a bit of a faster pace than the Herons fine dining and there is an outdoors pool for events in the summer!

There is little doubt this property is first class.  However, I will NOT return due to their practice of booking up the facility to locals Friday through Sunday and denying access to hotel guests.  I wanted to stay at this property primarily because of its amenities.  Imagine my surprise when, 30 minutes after check-in, I was refused reservations at both the spa and dining facility ALL WEEKEND.  Worse yet,  if you don't book a service in the spa, they deny you access to the entire spa (steam room etc).  Talk about bait and switch!  Market the spa and 5 star dining on their website, entice you to book a reservation at top dollar rates and then deny you access to the very facilities they tout.  Outrageous!

Sadly, I didn't see the significant number of negative reviews about this before I booked the reservation.

Both the hotel and the spa are excellent—The rooms are well appointed and the interior and architecture throughout the Umstead are beautifully designed. The hotel staff are extremely friendly and attentive! The outside trail and pool are great amenities that add to the modern and relaxing feel of this hotel.
