I have worked with The Tile Man twice - for a slate mudroom floor, and for a glass mosaic kitchen backsplash. Both times, the work was done well and the quality of the work done met my high standards, which is why I feel obligated to give a couple stars. However, the lack of professionalism by the workers, and the way I was actually treated disrespectfully by the owner is what has promped me to write this negative review. It was very difficult to schedule the install dates as they are very busy, and seem to be understaffed and unable to handle the volume. I was very patient about this, and finally scheduled the install weeks after the original estimate. The night before the install began, I spoke with the owner and let him know that if there was any extra tile after the backsplash was finished, I would like the excess to be used on a small strip of bare wall above the window. The owner said this was fine, just let the workers know when they arrived in the morning. The next morning, I asked the two tilers about it, and they implied that they did not think there would be any excess tile leftover. I felt that they were just dismissing me and just didn't feel like climbing up on the counter to do that one spot whether there was enough tile or not. I asked them to just check when they got close to the end of the backsplash to be sure there was or was not enough extra tile. After day 1, I asked again, and they said they did not think there would be enough. On the second day, they were supposed to arrive at 9, but did not arrive until after 10, then they started packing up for the day at 1:30. I noticed there was extra tile and there appeared to be extra time for the day so I asked again if they could use the extra tile above the window before packing up their equipment. I knew they were only returning the follow day for grout and would not need the same tools so I wanted to give them the opportunity to take care of the tiling before they packed up things they might need. They told me there was not enough extra tile and packed up and were gone by 2pm. After they left, I laid out the tile and there was absolutely more than enough tile. There was enough to do that space twice. It was clear to me that the two tilers just wanted to get out of there for the day and thought that they could just dismiss the customer's request by lying about what was feasable. I decided to contact the owner to ask him if he could direct the two tilers to in fact tile that small space the next day when they returned to grout. I knew this would be inconvenient because they had already packed up their equipment, but I felt that that was their own fault because I tried to give them the opportunity to do it before they had packed up. I texted the owner and complimented him on the work done so far, but asked if the two tilers could please be told to tile the small space as previously discussed, and he responded angrily with exclamation marks and rude language, and started ranting that I was screwing up his schedule and this was not part of the original estimate and it is unreasonable demands like this that make it so difficult for him to stick to a schedule and that what I was asking was completely out of line and would require an entire extra day be scheduled because it could not be done on the same day as grouting. (Keep in mind, the extra space would have taken an extra hour max if it was addressed the first or second day when I requested and when the equipment was still set up, and that second day, if they had actually arrived on time, they would have had that extra hour, or if they did not pack up and leave by 2pm because it was a Friday, they also could have finished it that afternoon). When the owner replied with this series of nasty texts, I was completely caught off guard, I felt as though I was being scolded for doing something wrong when in fact, I am the customer and was simply communicating the services I desired which I intended to pay him for. I'm exceptionally disappointed and disgusted in his behavior.
