I had a great experience with U-Haul of Urbandale. I had scheduled an installation of a trailer hitch on my SUV in the morning. They had asked if I was going to leave it there or be waiting, I'd planned on waiting as I had things to pick up with a trailer as soon as the install was done. When I got there, they were slammed (as Saturday mornings must be one of the busiest days of the week for them). I asked them for a time frame on when it would be done. They said that there was no time frame with drop off's, but that they would have it done between 9-4:00. There were only two of them working and they had to man the front desk, check people in and out and do the installs when they found time. 

This had me in a bit of a bind as I explained to them, as I had planned on meeting someone at 12:00 with a trailer. They told me that they would do their best, but they were short staffed. There was an IHOP across the street and I grabbed some breakfast. When 12:00 rolled around, they had some how managed to get the hitch installed, wiring hooked up and had me out the door. 

Based on the small sample of interactions I saw them handle that day while hanging out at a U-Haul on a Saturday, it must take a special kind of patience to have this job. People were showing up unannounced with no reservations expecting to have a truck right away. The reviews I read here were not indicative of the effort I received to accommodate me.  

Do your part, call ahead, make reservations and write down the specifics of what they tell you. It will make your life a lot easier. Nice work!

We had our hitch installed here and the general manager who works with the hitches helped us out with putting on our own bike rack.  He explained what the problem was that we had been having in such detail that even I could understand it :) We followed his suggestions and our bike rack is now secure and ready for use.  We tried to tip him, but he graciously refused.  It is so rare to find someone who gives such good customer service and genuinely wants to help.  Thank you so much!

I was buying a stuffed armchair that wouldn't fit in my Corolla, so I booked a U-Haul van for 4:30. I got to the U-Haul store at 4:15 and saw there were 4 people in line ahead of me and only 1 person working behind the counter (there turned out to actually be 3 people working but the 2nd guy was outside most of the time and the third guy was exclusively outside, dealing with return trucks, so there were only 2 people for the counter). 

I waited in line for almost an hour and didn't get to the counter until 5:10 (by this point, one of the people ahead of me had given up and left without being helped, so they'd only actually helped 3 people in one hour). I left at 5:15, an hour after I got there and 45 minutes past my reservation time. By the time I left, there were 6 more parties in line behind me.  

I only needed the U-Haul for about an hour, to go across town, so I brought it back by 6:15 (the store was open until 7). Fortunately this time (somehow) I was the only customer in the store so I was helped right away. When I tried to complete the return of the vehicle, the guy behind the counter said my card on file wasn't being run by the computer and I'd need to swipe it again - okay, no big deal. Then he said that didn't work, and that the store has 2 work cell phones to ring people up on but those weren't working, so he could try and check me out *using the U-Haul app on his own personal phone*. I said that made me really uncomfortable and I'd rather not. He went outside to get the other guy working and he was able to get me checked out successfully. 

The guys working were nice enough, but to suggest that he ring me up on his personal cell phone was a bit too far for me -  I know he was trying to be helpful and get me out of there but I can't imagine that's something that U-Haul would train employees to do. Clearly this place was understaffed when I was there. Not sure if that's a regular occurrence, since this is my first (and likely last) time as a customer, but I really hope they're able to get some more people working on the rest of these July Saturdays when so many people are moving.

The new guy they hired to hook up trailers was very helpful.

TIP: Pull past the door when returning your truck or trailer as both times I was here somebody stopped in front of the door causing a huge backup. There's a yellow line with arrows showing you where to go.
