University Hospital

About

University Health Care System has been a health leader in the Augusta area for nearly 200 years. We have worked diligently to enhance the quality of life for everyone and to provide the highest level of care to the communities we serve.

Story

University Health Care System is anchored by the 581-bed University Hospital, and serves Augusta-Richmond County and the surrounding region. University Hospital is governed by the Board of Trustees of University Health Services, which serves voluntarily to help ensure that our patients have quality medical services. Founded in 1818 as City Hospital, the hospital was first located on the 100 block of Greene Street. University has since moved through four facilities to its present location, which opened in 1970. Over the years, the campus has expanded to include the Heart & Vascular Institute and office buildings that house more than 600 private practice physicians and various treatment centers.

University has a long history as a leader in delivering cardiovascular, cancer and women's services. We developed the area's first outpatient cardiac catheterization and performed the region's first angioplasty. We opened the area's first Breast Health Center and put the area's first Mobile Mammography Unit on the road, giving more women in our community access to breast cancer screening.

Our W.G. Watson, M.D., Women's Center features 36 obstetrical suites and state-of-the-art surgical suites dedicated for obstetrical and gynecological patients. The center has a well-baby nursery and a 40-bed Level III Special Care Nursery offering neonatal intensive care to our smallest and most critically ill infants.

The Heart & Vascular Institute, a 188,000-square-foot cardiovascular center with 72 universal inpatient suites, is the largest, most comprehensive center of its kind in the region and offers a full range of heart and vascular care, from diagnosis to rehabilitation.

Recognizing the need to serve more of the community closer to home, University has established medical centers in South Richmond County and expanded services in Columbia County to include medical office buildings, a joint-venture diagnostic imaging center, a skilled nursing facility, a joint venture Day Surgery Center and Prompt Care facilities. Columbia County is also the home of Brandon Wilde, widely recognized as one of the finest "Life Care" retirement communities in the nation.

University is accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC), which is an independent, not-for-profit organization, established more than 50 years ago. The Joint Commission is governed by a board that includes physicians, nurses and consumers. The Joint Commission sets the standards by which health care quality is measured in America and around the world.

Beware of Fraudulent Billing and Falsifying Medical Records! Went in for a low grade urgent situation. When the nurse came to draw my blood, I asked "What tests are being ordered?", and was told, "an RBC". When I received my bill, I was shocked to have over $1,000 in charges for multiple blood tests that were never disclosed to me, and 100% completely unnecessary. I called multiple times and spoke with multiple departments in regards to these charges, and was told that the "the consent for treatment that you signed includes ay tests or treatments that are considered necessary by the physician." I went back and re-read the consents that I signed, and no where on there does it say that I will be lied to, and not told what is being ordered or done to me upon asking. ACTUALLY, it says "you have the right to make informed decisions regarding your care. Inherent in this right is the right to consent to treatment, the right to refuse treatment, and the right to be informed about what will be occurring during the time of hospitalization". Quite the opposite of what actually occurred. Make sure to review your bill, because they'll bill you for whatever they please without your consent, and lie to you about it in the process. Additionally, they will lie and falsify your medical record. The nurse that discharged us did our infant's newborn screen blood test. She told us it was done, and here was the paper on how to follow up, and gave us the instructions and receipt. When my daughter's tests were no where to be found, I called the hospital to find out what happened. The nurse at first stated that I refused the test all together. I disputed that claim, as two other witnesses were in the room with me when the test was done. The nurse then changed her story and said that she did not get enough blood and we refused to have our child re poked. Again, another outright lie, as two other witnesses were in the room and never once were we told there was a problem and our child had to be re-poked. I was told it's our word against the nurse's, and that the nurse now had documented our chart that we refused the test. Our child's life was potentially endangered by not having this newborn screening done, all because a nurse wanted to cover her tracks? Completely unethical and zero accountability and responsibility taken by the hospital.

The nurses and Doctor were professional but if you are suffering from a mental Illness of ANY kind, please do NOT expect compassion or empathy..With that said, I appreciated them checking to make sure I was not suffering from a life threatening situation. As regards to my blood work, I find it unacceptable that I have to send off for my results and it not be in my chart like the nurse said it would... What’s up with that?

I wouldn't even give 1 star if I had a choice. I went in today at 11:00 am and was discharged at 3:00 pm. I went in with chest pain, shortness of breath (like a weight sitting on my chest) it is scary not being able to breathe, also dizziness and fatigue. They did an EKG and supposedly ran a blood test. I paged the nurse a total of 3 times. She never came. Finally the Dr came in and I was able to use the restroom. I couldn't go because I was hooked up to all these machines. After I used the restroom I ended up hooking myself up back to the machine because I got tired of the beeping. She came in about 35 minutes later and was going to hook me up and I told her I did it but she didn't even hookup my blood pressure cuff. The Dr came back and said I had a kidney infection so he prescribed me antibiotics and naproxen for my chest pain. My shortness of breath was the main reason for visiting. Not once did I get a breathing treatment and not one person asked me if I was having trouble breathing. They did not share my lab results after I asked for my hemoglobin to be tested. While getting discharged I asked the nurse if I could look up my results on their website and she said yes that it would show my results and show the normal ranges it should be in. As I'm waiting for my ride I login the website with no problem at all only to find that my results are not on there. It says no results found. So my question is did they even run my blood? And if they ran it where are my results? I'm almost positive my hemoglobin is low because I know my body and something is not right. I'm not having breathing problems and chest pains because of a kidney infection. I cannot believe that I didn't even get to talk to the Dr for one minute. I will never go to this hospital ever again. They have a whole lot of incompetent and negligent people running this place.

This is the most awful hospital. The staff is rude, and uncaring. Their billing department is an absolute joke. They are horrible here. The ER staff is obnoxious.

My 88 year old mother broke her hip on Friday and went to this hospital. Her surgery was Sunday and they are already sending her to the nursing home TODAY. She is not ready to leave but they could care less. They also scratched her eye during surgery and refused to take blame for it. The nurse assigned to her admitted she was still in school and didn't know much. My friend ended up helping my mom more than any staff. Both the nurse and another staff bumped my mom's foot (same side as broken hip) right after her surgery causing her intense pain. You would think they would be more careful and aware of this. Horrible, horrible place....
