Wow, I'm seeing a LOT of angry folks on here. Let's set the record straight:

I'm a chef by trade and a big lover of the environment. What the family at Valley Oaks is doing is an ENTIRELY vertically integrated product. The family does everything from animal husbandry to processing straight on the facility, so the animals don't travel further than 30 minutes in their entire lifespan. They use the manure that the cows produce to fertilize the land on which they grow the things like hay and corn FOR the aforementioned animals. And the animals themselves? Oh, they're happy, and let me tell you why:

Although genetics certainly are a factor, most agree that happy cows produce good quality beef. I think the USDA percentage of prime beef (which is defined with excellent taste and marbling of fat) is about 2% of all beef produced, last I checked. The average amount of prime beef that these folks put out is about 18%. Mathematically, that proves that they love their cows - plus, they play them old school country music. I know, I've seen and heard it. 

The hate on this page appears to be the result of a witch hunt by folks that seem to be afraid that their property values are going to go down. I for one stand with the farmer, for the farmer is the legs that America stands on. The family, whom I've met personally,  encourages purveyors and chefs to tour their facilities, take tons of photos, and the response is always the same: "This isn't what I thought it'd be." If you want to tour the facility yourself, ask for Jake. They seriously love giving tours and showing off! Now doesn't that seem counterproductive from a company that apparently has so much reason for shame?

These people truly love their cows and truly love what they do. They're trying very hard to put out a responsible product as well as a tasty product, and I think they're succeeding, in spite of the adversity of their so-called neighbors. Please respect the farmer and what they do for this country. You can't have great steaks - which, by the way, are freaking delicious - without happy cows. They have happy cows.

I am a meat lover. And it is possible their meat tastes good, I will never find out. There are more important things than quality of meat or the potential lower price gained by reducing distance traveled to the plate. Things like not compromising the lives of others in order to deliver such a product. Things like not trading the health and sustainability of the land and a community that has a history and a future. Things like PEOPLE matter more than PROFIT and POWER. I will gladly support VO when they move their operation to a location that does not have such a permanent negative impact on hundreds of homes with thousands of people; when they recognize they are doing a great disservice to Lone Jack residents and beyond.

Ruined a good butcher shop by turning it into a commercial feed-lot! They moved a nasty feedlot into a densely populated area with 900 ppl 3 miles or less from the facility. Upping the herd from 600 to 6999, one cow less than you need a air quality permit, destroying surrounding property owners home values and quality of life. The Wards choose to operate the business with no concern for neighbor or community. Business's that put their needs above those of the towns they operate are the lowest form of life.

After driving by their massive farm, the stench alone made me throw up just a little in my mouth. Although their meat is decent, living conditions for my barnyard friends is below morally acceptable. Go put them cows in Clinton or something.
