I was very disappointed with both the service as well as the food. I went there on a Sunday night. The service was barely present and painfully slow. I was there for two hours (not by choice, but that is how long it took them to produce a soup, an appetizer, one dinner course, and check). I never received a refill for my drink, and water never even made it to my table. I was brought cold bread with nothing to dip it in, no butter, no plate. I had to ask three times for some olive oil. The gnocchi was tasteless and dry. It was like eating cardboard rolled up into hard balls... I don't intend to return...

Great service and delicious food. What more could you want. It was our first time here and it definitely won't be the last. The lemon cello cake was so good I wanted to order a second piece.

I made reservations for my wife on her birthday at Vecchia Osteria after many friends said this place has the best food in town. I was running a bit late, and they would not let my wife and mother-in-law put in an order for appetizers. That's a little bizarre... Moving on, there were 3 tables seated, served, offered coffee and dessert, tabs paid and new customers re-seated before we received our meals. I am making this assumption, but the fact my mother-in-law's chicken parm was overcooked and my wife's risotto was crunchy was because they sat under a heat lamp for a bit. My wife ordered a special which was jumbo lump crab meat over risotto with a light tomato and wine sauce. She was served two split-tail prawns over crunchy risotto and no sauce resembling a tomato wine sauce. Why not send it back you ask? Well, it was an hour and a half after we were seated. It was after 8pm, and we did not want to spend anymore time than we needed. Overall, the experience was well below par. The service was mediocre, the environment was not over-the-top, the food was not special. With other Italian food options in Newtown available, my wife and I will not be visiting Vecchia Osteria again.

Edited follow-up review below... I was not impressed. We had a group of 20. It took a smidge over two hours before food arrived. The seating is very cramped and the food was good. However, for the pricing the food should be great. Parking is troublesome and the outside area is tented in cold weather with a single heater superheating a small area of the room making that table uncomfortable which causes the staff to turn it down which in turn causes the rest of the room to be quite cold. The staff was very courteous and accommodating, but the facility is too small to be efficient. Edit: I am revising my review to 4 stars. After visiting again with a smaller group of 7 we were seated and orders taken within minutes. The food was great and the service was prompt. Perhaps I just caught them on an of night. This was a night and day difference. The space is still small for large crowds and the outdoor structure still exists. Regardless, good food and very friendly staff.

Had lunch there for the first time last Friday. The aroma I smelled walking in compelled me to order their seafood appetizer in marinara sauce. It was delicious and it filled me up so much I didn't even need to order a main course. Looking forward to bringing my wife there for dinner.
