Dr. Ather is wonderful. Sweet, gentle and listens to your concerns and addresses them with a professional and caring demeanor. Her MA Michelle is also lovely. The front and exit staff are efficient too. Maribel in the front office followed up with me in a timely manner. I am new to this practice but I would definitely recommend them and give them top ratings.

I must state that I LOVE Dr. Boss! This is commentary on the business office of VRFM; NOT on the docs. I don't want to have to find a new doctor, however, this most recent fiasco has me questioning the integrity of the business office. At a recent visit I was asked if I'd had a vision test in the last year. I told the Doctor's Assistant that I had not. She explained that they were offering basic vision screenings as and asked if I would be willing to have one. Admittedly, I should have asked whether or not it was covered by my co-pay, etc. but I have now learned my lesson. IMO, ANYTHING that happens within the doctor's office after I have remitted payment should be included unless, and until, I am SPECIFICALLY told that whatever test, treatment, conversation, etc. will require additional payments, insurance filing, co-pays, etc. In this case I was not given this information and wound up with a $337 insurance claim for the most BASIC of eye exams (The equivalent of a $60 exam at an opthamologist). Of this, I was expected to pay $125. I called and asked for a explanation and informed the office that I would not be paying the charge. I got a return call from the office manager, Randy who stated that he would instruct the members of the practice to be more forthright with the information in the future and apologized. I asked what that meant for the current bill and was told that I would have to call the billing office to 'see what they could do'. After explaining the situation, Carla stated "we are just the billing office. We collect payments. We can't decided if a charge is valid or not." and stated that she would send an e-mail to her boss and have someone call me back within 24 hours. Before I received that call I received another call from Randy who was offering a 15% discount on the charge. I told him that I would not accept the offer and expressed my feelings about how the business side of VRFM was being mis-run. I called my insurance company and found that the exam had been coded as a 'surgical procedure' and NOT as a opthamalogical procedure. Although this COULD have been a coding error, I question why Randy, once made aware of an upset patient, would not have researched the coding, etc. to verify it's validity before returning a call. At that point, a simple conversation stating that there was a coding error, and the claim would be resubmitted, would have appeased me; at least for a short time. I further found that my insurance company would not have paid the claim, even if coded correctly, because they are NOT an opthamologist. My insurance will, for the cost of the copay alone, allow for one 'free' FULL eye exam per year when performed by a licensed ophthalmologist. Why would anyone accept a 'service' that was going to charge for a procedure you could have done elsewhere for, essentially, free. To add insult to injury, I was also charged a co-pay for the test even though I had already paid a co-pay when I arrived at the office for my appointment. Although he constantly stated that there was no 'intent' to trick patients, I simply don't see how that isn't the case. That is, unless it is COMPLETE incompetence! After leaving a voicemail for Randy telling him what I had found through my insurance company, I got another call from Randy. This time the normally soft-spoken Randy, seemingly through gritted teeth, told me that they were going to waive all fees. Nearly before I could respond, he said "have a nice day" and tried to hang up. I was able to stop him and asked him if this was the way they normally code/bill their patients for this procedure. He claimed that it wasn't and added that my charge was being waived and that there was "no need to worry about how other patients were charged." I stated that I was sorry that things had gotten so contentious to which his response was "I just want happy patients" (through gritted teeth). I explained that this fiasco had left a really bad taste in my mouth. He stated that he would let Dr. Boss know. My advice is to check with your insurance if you had an eye exam done here!

Dr. Ather is great! If you have to deal with Barbie, one of her aides, good luck. She was rude, uncouth, and completely out of line when I tried to call and request a refill. I recently moved and had not had a chance to find another doctor so she refused to give me another refill since I cannot follow up with Dr. Ather. She yelled at me and said I had a month to find a doctor and told me that it was my problem. She made me feel like I had to explain my personal circumstances to her! I told her that she had no right to question why I had not found another doctor. It's none of her business! Moving to a completely different part of the state takes its toll on everyone involved. Registering kids in schools, unpacking, setting up utilities, not to mention work! I'm so sorry BARBIE that my schedule and inability to get everything done on time is SUCH an inconvenience for you. She should be fired for the way she spoke to me. I'm a decent human being, and I was a very loyal patient. I've NEVER called a doctor's office and was met with such hostility right off the bat. I retaliated in self defense Miss Doll. Completely unprofessional and I do NOT recommend going there based on the staff alone.
